04 TL vs. 04 S60R

I went on a drive with the local car club yesterday. I drove my TL and my best friend brought his S60R. 0-60 times are pretty even on most days (assuming I can launch properly). However that Volvo crushed me over 100. We took off down a highway and things were pretty even. My car shifted into 5th and stopped pulling so hard. I was doing about 115 when he just flew by me at 135. That turbo is amazing. I thought my car was always quick on the interstate, but I guess my butt dyno is off a little...

Yes it's got 300hp, but it's several hundred pounds heavier and the all wheel drive robs power also. I just can't believe how efficient the turbo is once it's spooled up.

I was considering keeping my car for several years, now I'm considering a replacement.

how come your TL shifted to 5th so early? The 3rd gear in my 2G TLS can get up to 100mph so i assume 4th gear should do at least 130mph right? The 5th gear in my car is pretty weak but 4th gear is enough to pass anything quickly.

But yea, 300hp vs 258hp, i think it's more than enough to cancel the extra weight, and I think in normal condition, the volvo is FWD.

I thought 5th gear was an overdrive gear? You can reach top speed on 4th

Yea that's true too juruki. So no doubt he would lose if his car shifted to 5th gear. But even if it did stay in 4th, I don't think he could keep up with the S60R, but for sure the gap wouldnt be as large.

Thanks for the confirmation. There is another event in January, so I will have another chance against the S60R. Maybe I should sneak in some performance upgrades between now and then, and make sure I can take 4th gear up to ~130. I think you guys are right that I will still lose, but it would be interesting to see by how much.

No seriously, I think your car is fine. How many times do we EVER exceed 80MPH? How many times have we really raced etc. One thing that I had as an advantage for me was that it was relatively cool outside. Wait til it's 90 degrees and you'll definitely smoke me. As for how I drove the car, I had it in Advanced with the Automatic in D. Do also remember that I have a CAI that works pretty good compared to the WAI that are out there and I don't have a body kit.

You need practice driving it, use SS mode and not even use 5th gear. I think I have used 5th gear like twice

Keep in mind that while the Volvos are 300hp, it takes not much effort to get them up to 350hp or more - that is the beauty of turbos.

Well I just finished installing Acura Race Pedals in my car. It may not make it go any faster, but my car still looks a lot cooler than a Volvo!!!

Just wanted to drop by and say "hi".

Came accross acurazine by way of searching for specs of the RL vs. S60R. Love the RL's and was at a light next to one the other day...wasn't sure how I'd fare if he launched it...but he didn't, so it left me wondering.

I was glad to see the contents of this thread. There are quite a few threads that Google will pull up with TL members flaming S60R owners. Then again, there seemed to be a couple R owners/enthusiasts that decided to post stupid comments under "Guest" login. We're not ass so dense as to think other cars can't whomp us!

With that being said...I thought I'd drop a little info for you guys if you ever curious...

The turbo on the R is very small and spools up quickly..but drops off after 5k rpms. Oh...and don't let the MT guys talk crap...its been proven by GPS with 4 cars that the 6sp AT is slightly faster than the 6sp MT. They hate that! :P

Here's my stock dyno (intake & exhaust is still stock IMO) (AT)

As far as the "boxy" looks or thought that they're a boring design...some look like crap. They need a little touch of something to spice them up. Here's mine...

Anyway...with that being said...I love a nicely done TL and the new Type S is great. I may lurk once in a while..if anyone has Volvo questions, I'll try to asnwer them. I don't talk crap...I'd rather take it to the track...and yet to do so in the R.

Chris

I just know the RL is 300bhp AWD. Same as the S60R. Puts it in the same category. I think they're both around $45k too.

Then again...I hear the Acura AWD system is very slick. Volvo's Haldex AWD is really a FWD with a rear differential....transverse engine with 90% FWD and 10% RWD under normal conditions. As the front slips...more power is shifted to the rear.

This is why the Audi's edge us out...true AWD = better launch and handling.

true that the RL has 300bhp but it has way more weight than the volvo and is more or less a luxury car than a true sports sedan not a 100% sure but i think ive seen 0-60 in 6.7's although thats not slow slow its slow in terms of a S60R but yes the AWD on the RL is very slick indeed>

Yeah Acura's low torque and lack of any boost means high end power loss and that's why it's not nearly as fast.

Are we talking about the S80 or s60r here? Cause the S60R is 3717lbs. Considering that it's 300lbs lighter than the RL, and it makes 30-40lbs/ft more torque than the RL at lower rpms, there's no doubt it will beat the RL in terms of performance. But yea, the SH-AWD is awesome, even BMW has to copy it.

My bad...I was quoting the gross weight. I re-checked the service manual and the 2006 AWD R is 3660 lbs - curb weight.

Thanks brownie.
I don't race on the streets anymore...not that launching between lights at posted limits couldn't be considered racing. I live in copland USA...they're like locust here.
If I have friends who want to see how they compare, we usually find a 2-lane on-ramp and see who can hit 70 1st.
Otherwise, I'm always up to take the R up to CA Speedway or another 1/4 mile.

Might go to LACR this Friday night (4/13). 5:30 to 10:00 - 1/4 mile runs...$5 to watch, $20 to run.

A club I hang with is getting a group...all from the 3rd Generation Eclipse, but many have moved on to other cars...for sure 1 C5, 1 EVO, maybe 2 STi's, and possibly a Mazda 6.

Would be happy to have some friendly runs against the TL community.

I'm 50/50 on going. Gotta arrange with wifey and kid.

Ok...got the thumbs up from wifey.

I'm gonna head up to LACR in Palmdale CA this friday night. Open 1/4 miles, 5:30 to 10:30.
13.99 or faster requires helmet
14.00 or slower is fine without

If anyone here is in Southern Cali and wants to meet a laid back group, we have a pretty good mix of cars coming. They're always open to meet new peeps.

I posted on socaleuro.com too...mabye we can get some bimmers, s4's, and the VW guys out too.

Oh, those are some relaxed rules, at Englishtown Raceway, in New Jersey a helmet is required irreguardless of how slow you are, it prevented my friend from running his car.
