04 6MT TL, 3.8 Genesis

On the highway the other day, was cruisin...just keeping up with another car that was going pretty fast. I don't condone it but it was after work and the highway was pretty empty...going about 80 or 90...
All of a sudden a Genesis pulls up and goes by me, I downshift to 4th and push it, started creeping up on his bumper...we both back off as we approach some mild traffic, another mile opens up and he guns it and again I creep up on him from behind (lol).

Is this normal?!? I KNOW he was trying, he blacked out his emblems etc and it said 3.8 so I KNOW it was the 6 cylinder and wasn't grandma driving, he punched it. I test drove one and thought it felt pretty quick, but maybe didn't feel much fast than my TL. I guess I confirmed that.

Any similar experiences? And definitely not knocking this car...it was my leading choice when I was test driving right before deciding to keep my car.

J.

Believe me or not , I used to race the new genesis 3.8 with my 07 5AT. We started from a dig. It's really surprise that a 3.8 coupe ( I don't know AT or MT ) can't catch up with my car . I don't know because of the driver or car . We're both stock.

I think it was just the driver of the TL with mad skillz :gheylaugh:

All jokes aside, this thread might change my mind on wanting a Genesis lol

What did you expect? Stock, it's a low to mid 14 second car at 97-100 mph, depending on transmission.

I'd say he might have had a passenger. You are stock, right? Or just CAI? Either way, good run. I'd say with equal drivers it's a drivers race. If that makes sense

I ran my boys stock Genesis 3.8 6MT each with 1 passenger and my cousin driving the Gen so the drivers were equal. I honked it off and got a late start () so he had an immediate 1 car jump at the line. I started creeping at the top of 2nd and then pulled even at the top of 3rd, proceeding to pull 1 car thru mid 4th. Though he got a head start and my clutch was slipping a little on this particular run, it was close. Btw this was with my car the way it stands now, full bolt on. Obviously if we would've taken off at the same time it would've been a different outcome. I probably would've pulled 2-3 cars.

However, this was a little different because it was from a dig and RWD>FWD, but still relative. Those cars have pretty strong top end with the 3.8, and the 6MT/6AT run very similar.

Come to think of it, I was just as fast as I am now with just CAI/Jpipe according to the track. So I guess it does make sense if you have CAI ha. Ugh.

Hmmm...good info!
No sir, he didnt' have a passenger and neither did I...and I have about 100 pounds of system in the trunk too.
What I do have for performance (ish) are:
intake resonator gone and drop in K&N
stage 3 exhaust
seafoamed
slave cylinder mod
TB coolant bypass
That's all...

I guess I would have expected more...got my head wrapped around 310 HP and a two door car. Guess it's not as impressive as I thought.

310hp coupled with RWD and heavier = more drivetrain loss and similar to slightly worse power to weight. Good run. I keep thinking how my car should be a good amount faster than one with just I/E. Yet my track experiences beg to differ

nice runs. on dragtimes.com there is an auto genesis coupe with i/e that ran a 13.6 @ 104mph. another one that was stock ran a 14.3 @ 97mph. no 6spds on there though. ive heard they run equal to the auto.

I will say the AT shifted VERY quickly on my test drive...funny thing though, the car I tested had a friggin shake going 90...kinda annoyed me about a new car.

Anyway, 13.6 is pretty respectable. Dang...am I going to have to buy a J pipe?!?! lol.

Fast track: 90' above sea level, and if you check the weather for that date it was probably in the 30's. The only real advantage they seem to have over a 6MT TL, stock to stock, is a cleaner launch.

Yea, I've raced one on the street before. Not proud of it but there was no traffic/people around and was very curious of the outcome. I had the better launch in my 04 TL at and I heard him floor it. He(3.8 coupe stick) stayed a bumper behind me the whole time. I believe he was stock though, I have bolt-ons.
