I am debating on which intake my bro is to get..

I have experience with injen and on my car it was a hell of an awesome mod. Lots of sound and def a bit of extra top end. U could tell the car was breathing easier for sure.

What I like about injen is that they dyno each of their intakes. My car they claimed 10.1 hp and 7.7 tq and I will have to say they are accurate.

So there is that option or the xlr8 intake by AEM. I like xlr8 but I am really curious as to the dyno numbers.

I have decided he's going to get the xlr8 j pipe so it would be kinda cool if both the mods were xlr8. But anyone know if the figures compare to the 12.9 hp and 11.7 tq injens make?

That's the whole reason I bought injen for my car in the beginning. Because they were the only ones who dyno test and tell you the maximum gains u get off their products.

These are not top end gains by the way, they are peak gains meaning the car made that much extra power at a certain point in the powerband.

That is maybe where people are misled. They buy three mods that claim roughly 10 hp increase and their max power only goes up by 14-16 hp. That is the reality of bolt ons. But still it does make a big ass difference. Especially when ur fully bolted like I am in the CL. Imagine the tls. One day his car will be tweaked too.

We are first doing a baseline dyno before any mods and then after the intake and j pipe we will go for another dyno.


So which intake does he get? Is one better or is it a coin toss?

I'm assuming your brother has a 3G? Honestly, if he's pretty much stock, he'll be lucky to see two horsepower from any intake. They all do the same thing. They make noise and look pretty (second one is debatable; I like the stealth look of stock or Airaid). Once you start opening up the exhaust and freeing up the induction side of things, you may see more.

Regarding the dynos. I hate to be the first one to apparently break the news to you that manufacturers have been manipulating them to sell products since they were invented.

And lastly, I wasn't aware that XLR8 and AEM have collaborated on an intake?

I dunno how u think an intake won't help.

Have u put one on and hated it or something?

Cause I have put intakes on multiple cars and they all made power. I raced before and after and u could clearly see the difference.

The last one I did was 2 weeks Ago. A shitty cheap ebay cold air intake on a mazda 6 3.0 and that thing must have made 15 hp. It was keeping up with my car practically after we did that mod.

So I have to say an intake will make even more power on the tls than a Mazda 3.0.

Lots of people here on Azine love the stock intake and don't like aftermarket intakes, unless it's a 4" air raid. IIRC Injen / AEM claim ~10-13hp, but I would suggest assuming ~5-10hp, depending on other supporting mods, to be on the conservative side. They do tend to inflate things a bit.

The stock intake sucks balls in my opinion. Yeah it's a "cold air intake" but so what? Most cars now a days draw air from the fender, so all are "cold air" intakes. Our stock intakes were designed to be quiet above all else, and that usually comes at the cost of performance. Yeah they have a "velocity stack" to try and make up for it, and yes they flow enough air to feed the engine in stock form - like most stock air intakes do anyway, but they still have a big ass resonator box, more bends than a canyon road, are heavy in comparison to aftermarket units (due to all the plastic parts), are quiet, have a near 90 degree bend at the air filter and the typical snorkel section, which promotes turbulence. Ditch the bitch. Hell my girl's kia has a better system - from TB right to air filter box right to front of hood, in a ram air design.

IMO, if you're planning to keep your stock TB and IM, go with one of the aftermarkets, Injen / AEM, or do your own ~3.5" kit from someone like air raid. If on a budget, then remove everything on the stock intake from the air box down, leaving a piece of tubing in place to extend where it draws air from closer to the front bumber (search, there's a thread on how to do this). If you're planning on doing the 3.7L TB / IM swap, then look at a 4" air raid kit. Try to copy the aftermarket designs, which typically only have two ~45 degree bends. Metal or plastic doesn't really matter under acceleration, as the air moves through too quickly for any heat soak to make a diff.

If you really have to have an aftermarket cai, get the cheapest one. They are all the same, they make more noise and thats pretty much it.

I have the Injen on my 04 TL, and love it! Pretty loud, but not overwhelming. The stock intake was a bitch to get off though, and have no idea why. Lmao

Both intakes will make power. The AEM V2 should make a bit more power, but probably not anything significant.

We didn't work with AEM on the intake. I just got tired of having people ask me if the AEM V2 intake fits the TL so we made our own part #.

And you do get what you pay for. If you buy a cheap ebay intake you'll get a cheap ebay intake, with thin poor quality aluminum and a filter that typically wont' flow well. At the very least upgrade to an AEM or K&N filter but be prepare for a cracked intake a couple years down the road.

If you get just get CAI and leave everything else stock, it won't benefit you much power wise. most people get CAI for the sound, what they don't know is removing the stock intake resonator box does the same s***, so why not save 300 bucks or so and put it towards a jpipe or something.

neither i have an AEM that is requires no tuning. and works extremlely well. however you need to remember a true cold air will only give you power at higher rpm so if your lookign for more torque off the line look into a short ram. I however prefer the somehwat turbo felt lag of the true cold air cause once you pass 4,000 rpms bye bye baby

also makes a great sound. not obnoxiouse and get plenty of compliments even still having stock exhaust.

i didn't need a "quick" answered, i'm only checking all the possibilities as i am a fresh new owner of a 05 tl
does the real intake is really what is showed on the picture?
and what about the sound? does a dual chamber make a louder scream than the other due to te size?

Our XLR8 intake does look like the picture. It is a full CAI system. I don't think the fact that it is a dual chamber intake will significantly change the sound, as it is designed to really increase power gains. I'd double check by asking a 3G owner that has purchased this intake as I've only heard this intake a few times in person.
