NY Inspection, entered wrong odometer reading
NY Inspection, entered wrong odometer reading
Hey Guys,
I live in New York and I recently had my car inspected since we have to do it every year. The problem is that I noticed on the inspection report that the tech entered "9000" miles instead of "90000" miles, which is what I have on my car (06 TL).
I did ask the tech about this, and he said it doesnt matter what you enter there. So my question is if I am going to get an odometer fraud alert on my carfax/autocheck report now that the mileage is inconsistent? Does anyone have any experience with this weird situation?
Thanks for any info.

I can't see why it matters and I also believe these don't go to carfax. Have you ever seen on a carfax that a car failed inspection for "x", but got fixed? Carfax is just major damage claimed by insurance and such. Just next time you go they will be amazed that you drove 81k + miles in two years.
I've seen many carfax's, including the one for my car, that show when it was brought in for inspection and the mileage. Maybe it depends on the shop you bring it to and whether they report it but I thought all that info gets reported to the DMV directly from the shop...and if the DMV gets it I would guess they would think it's a bit suspicious and call it an attempt at fraud.
My old Maxima has 200 some odd thousand miles on the odometer and NJ inspection at one point was off by a factor of 10 and put down 20 some odd thousand miles.
I didn't even noticed until I got home. I left it until two years later I went back for another inspection and this time they got it right. Never brought it up to them that it was wrong last time.
Don't know what effect it had on CarFax but I never ran one for my Max.

State Inspections do go on your CarFax record.
I believe you can actually contact them and have it corrected. It would be a pain if selling a car. For Ex: when I was selling my old car it showed 2 owners even though I was the original and only owner. Had to contact them and send some documents to get it straightened out.

i would at least contact the DMV/state inspection office, and get it corrected, cause it may flag it (the tech probably can't do anything about it now though, if the paper work has already been submitted)cause shit; i am going for depriciation value on the wife's subie, once it gets fix; because i will never be able to say that it has never been in an accident (and for your situation, the mileage may not be correct; i would not think it would be too big of a deal, especially being that you are trying to get it fix so shortly after)

It does make a difference if you are going to sell the car... I can't find a Carfax with one on it, but it with show as a discrepency on the report.... below is an example of a clean carfax and as you can see the miles are reported at each service and when it passed emmissions(inspection)... it has reports from NJ and GA and I am positive that it is done the same way in NY.... call DMV and get it fixed at no charge...since you already paid the $21 for the inspection
