Bonk! - Oh man, I just saw your tranny fried on Friday!! I'm sorry man! Hope you took it to Ron Tonkin and not A of P-town. I hate those guys over there. Used to give me the run-around all the time when I would order part from them. RT tho, my friend's parents have leased 2 MDXs and 2 TSXs from them and they have always been excellent service-wise. Anyways, goodluck and let us know what happens!

The service advisor called me on Saturday morning and said all they could do is help with 5% of the cost, but my portion would be $4200. I called Acura Customer Care, but they won't do anything for me since my TL-S is out of the VIN range. It also has 105K+ miles on it. Acura Cust Care said I should plead with the service manager at RTA, so I left him a voicemail a few minutes ago. We'll see. Such a bummer! If any of you have any close ties with the service manager at RTA or the district representative, can you hook me up?
In the meantime, I've got an '09 MDX loaner. I've owned SUV's in the past, so no problem driving a much larger vehicle. This MDX is sweet. Loaded with what I guess is the Tech Pkg - Navi, back-up camera, etc. Very nice. A lot slower than my lightly-modded TL-S, but handles great for an SUV. My 16y/o son loves it. Too bad I'm putting away so much into his and his brother's college funds. Well, not really - their futures are way more important than a new vehicle.

oh bummer, didnt notice you were an 03, from what I recall half of the 03 vins arent covered which is bs because from what I read, seems like they didnt even change anything on the tranny builds.
Took the gf to subaru in seattle this weekend and she picked up a new impreza wagon. The dude was cool and let me test drive all the turbo models while they were doing paperwork, Legacy gt, forester xt, and the brand new sti. God damn, the Sti is money, that thing is one fast car. I'm debating now if I want to strip my car down and jump on a new wrx. Dang, I'm at only 6k left on the loan but those trannies are garbage and I really dont want to sit on a few thousands on the tranny since i'm at 91k miles now. Had to replace two motor mounts this weekend as well, bummer.

yea the 3rd gear for the 2gen trannies gets too hot and the whole tranny craps out. That body tends to die at least once in its lifetime, the guy I bought the A spec rims from said he had acura replace their tranny 3 times. Acura has a warranty out for 7 years 109k miles or something like that. It goes for CL/TL auto trannies, the TL does not come with a 6spd tranny. Its either keep the car and save for a 6 spd swap, or strip down and trade for an awd car, ahhh car shopping is a bitch
#1579
that sucks.. got a chilton bible?? i would assume it would still be easy... unplug the wires.. raise the vehicle up.. drain the fluid, remove the axles, remove the starter, get a jack under the tranny.. unbolt the tranny.. remove the tranny side engine mount.. let the tranny come down.. and pull it out.. and reverse it from there.. probably would be a good idea to look for a new torque converter too.. it honestly would be easier if you have access to a lift but im talking about doing it from a garage..
#1580
for the price they are charging you might as well get a new vehicle.. thats an arm and a leg.. how much are trannies for that car? i would hope they are cheap..

^ werd. Either that or buy/source a reman. tranny yourself and find a independent shop (non performace shop) that specializes in honda/acuras. Most shops that are specialized tend to have mechs. that were previous master techs at the dealerships. That would probably cut the cost down by atleast 1g or more.
In other news, got my car in winter mode this past weekend. Car looks too plain jane without the volks. Anyone else winterized there car yet?

I can afford the $4200, but I don't want to buy a new vehicle and start car payments all over again, so I'm stuck.
I spoke to the service mgr and the service advisor at RTA, but they're not cutting me any breaks, other that saying the $4200 is the high end of the estimate so the cost may be lower when all is said and done. I would get a 3yr/36k warranty which I wouldn't get from a remanufactered/used tranny. I told them to go for it.
If there was a shop her in Oregon that did the 6-speed conversion, I'd go that route, but alas there are none.

I think I'm stuck going with RTA because I agreed over the phone with both the service manager and service advisor. If I were to go with any race shop, it'll take weeks for them to get all the parts needed for the conversion. No one, not even RichieV6 (IIRC) can turn around such a conversion in short time. Thanks for trying to help though.

Thanks man. I appreciate that. I should have gone to them for more service and maybe they would have goodwill me some. At least I'm not seriously inconvenienced by the replacement. Towing is paid by my insurance, and I have a good loaner until all is fixed.

Webster has been a bust for years, he supposed to have that stroke but there are guys on our team who has a higher percentage then he does. I really want him to do well because he has a body and defense we need. But man, watching him just stand on the perimeter and really not much else, hurts. Hes got a lot of potential, not sure if he will ever realize it.

Yeah, I was just going to post in this thread. I was on the way to an appointment at St. Vincents on Thursday afternoon when the tranny died. I was in 5th, but when I pressed the accelerator, all the car would do is rev the engine. I coasted all the way to the Park Way exit, just before the hospital. I got a tow from Speeds to Ron Tonkin.
The service advisor called me on Saturday morning and said all they could do is help with 5% of the cost, but my portion would be $4200. 2 - VIN range is arbitrary cut-off, but I'm sure you know that. I've read of more 03s with tranny probs than 02s. Of course, this site isn't representative of the actual population of 2Gs out there but still...
It's prob too late but if you hint at lawyering up they might be willing to help out a little. The warranty is to 109k (114.5 with odometer error) so you technically are still covered..might be still be under in time as well but that I'm not sure of. If you kept pretty good service records then you'll also have a better case..especially if you've done some flushes. Mention this site and what some have received recently to try to pry their wallets open a bit.
3 - MDX is very nice; friend's parents have leased both of theirs from RTA.. plus his and his brother's TSXs..and I've driven the 09 before..pretty solid ride but very different from a car..LOL

Anyways, mines at ~156k and still going strong :knockonwood: But I wouldn't mind if it went so I can have an excuse to do a 6MT swap..with maybe a J35
It's funny that it'll be that quick..cuz you know they have a bunch of those trannys in the back and they're just waiting for one of us 2Gers to pull up with their TL in the back of a tow-truck. If you had another car, I'd say take the time for a 6MT swap cuz the new one may just end up the same anyways. But I'm guessing it's your DD...

Just saw this on the 2G forum..
This guy was under miles and but not outta VIN, but it shouldn't matter because the cut-off is arbitrary and has no basis in actual reliability of tranny.
so i talked to acura today, they determined that the transmission was indeed bad. they have ordered one and it will be there tuesday or wednesday. Looks like my car will be fixed by Thursday at the latest, 100% free of charge.
lets hope this next one lasts more than 27,000 miles.

Acura Customer Care didn't budge on the "out of VIN range" argument. My VIN simply isn't covered, that's it. I couldn't get the SM to budge either. He said that they immediate went to their District Rep, since apparently only he can authorize goodwill for the trannies, or partial payment.
Yeah, it's my daily driver so I can't be without a car very long. If I was reasonably confident RichieV6 or someone else could get a 6-speed swap done in a week or two - guaranteed - I'd jump on that. But I've read that they would have to find the Accord, CL-S or 3rd Gen 6sp, plus all the parts, and that could take awhile.
Let's just hope that this replacement trans lasts the 36K miles. Maybe by then my oldest will have earned a scholarship for lacrosse so I don't have to pay for 4 years of college and I can buy a new car.

planning to take the base lip to bodyshop for custom fitting soon.
for the tails.. i'm lazy too and wondering if i really wanna take off the bumper for base tails. it won't take long if i start working on it but its always the "start" that doesn't happen. when will you have time to do the swap?

Min ive been kinda busy lately. And once the exhaust and headlights get here i think im gonna take her in for some trade in quotes.
What i did with my lights was just put up a WTB thread, and withing a day or two i had bought them. Then once installed i sold the base red lights. Im sure since you have type-S you can probably make money on the deal if you go that way.
Because now that i look at it, Tualatin Auto Body used a foam tape to hold on the lip, and cut it to fit the body. Not really wanting to separate that to remove the bumper.
