I have got to go to LeMans one day, it's on the list with Indy 500. I scratched off the Monaco GP 2 years ago.

Monaco is still #1 for me, but LeMans is top 3 for sure. Would love to do Suzuka as well.

Suzuka is fantastic. Spa would probably be next, then Silverstone. After that, probably Interlagos or Australia.

Drivers wary over safety changes at Le Mans ahead of 24 Hours - WEC - Autosport

Quote:
Praise of Le Mans' latest track safety updates has been tempered with drivers' concerns that the 24 Hours' circuit is losing its character.

Increased run-off where the final right-hander of the Porsche Curves bleeds into the left flick at Corvette met with a mixed response during Sunday's official pre-race test, though few questioned that safety had been improved.

Three-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Andre Lotterer told Autosport: "It is safer, I guess, but if the trend is continued it will be like driving through a parking lot with nothing around you.

"The Porsche Curves have always been one of the most iconic places at Le Mans and this is going to make it a little bit less thrilling.

"I think we have to be careful what we do this track."

Corvette driver Jan Magnussen, who missed the 2015 24 Hours after crashing in the Porsche Curves during qualifying, offered similar sentiments.

"I'm not necessarily a fan of moving the walls and the barriers further away," he said.

"If you move them miles away, this track becomes like any Formula 1 circuit and anyone can be fast."

Vincent Beaumesnil, sporting director of Le Mans organiser the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, said increasing the run-off was preferable to changing the circuit layout.

"The Porsche Curves are one of the most famous sections of track where we have cars going at 250km/h [155mph] between two walls," he told Autosport.

"One way to manage that situation would be to install a chicane, but that is a no-go for us.

"We want to keep the speed because it is part of the character of Le Mans, and this is a good compromise."

Beaumesnil explained that the Porsche Curves changes were designed to ensure a car hit the wall at a shallower angle.

The wall has been move back significantly and a large area of asphalt run-off added, which has created the potential for corner-cutting at Corvette.

Beaumesnil insisted track limits would be strictly enforced, while drivers suggested cutting was unlikely given the corner's off-camber nature.

The angle of the wall at the left kink that leads onto the short straight before the Ford chicane has also been changed.

This follows the 2015 accident in which Aston Martin driver Roald Goethe sustained back injuries after being tagged by the winning Porsche 919 Hybrid driven by Nico Hulkenberg.

A new system of corner markers, known as'floppies', was also trialled during the test in the latest attempt to reduce track-limit violations.

The spring-mounted devices failed to survive being hit, but Beaumesnil blamed this on last-minute alterations.

"We decided late to increase them in height to 40cm, which meant they did not go deep enough into their holes and that will change for the race," he explained.

The 2.59-mile Le Mans-Bugatti circuit has been resurfaced for 2017, which means new asphalt for 24 Hours layout from the second portion of the Ford Chicane to the start of the Esses.

Seriously, couldn't Porsche and Toyota come up with an original color scheme? It's ridiculous.

Gravel Trap: Le Mans looks to the future

Garage 56 was introduced in 2012 to showcase alternative and future technologies. “The idea is to leave as much room for creativity as possible,”Vincent Beaumesnil, Manager of the ACO Sports Division explained some time ago “Garage 56 explores the automobile technology of tomorrow and beyond. Environmental considerations such as fuel savings and carbon emission reduction are obviously very important.”

I've never watch LeMans before, but I've gotten very interested in WEC events over the last several months and am looking forward to it. We've cut the cord so I'm hoping its either streamable or on "regular" Fox.

Not on Fox. You need a cable subscription for Fox Sports 1. Or you can buy a pass on the Le Mans website for 10 euros.

10 hours in and the leading Toyota stops on course.

With reliability problems on the Toyotas and Porsches, maybe an LMP2 will win it???

Now the second placed Toyota stops on course. Not even half way into the race.

Cruel cruel fate for Toyota again?

2020 Regs

Le Mans Hybrids Will Race on Electric-Only Power for Short Segments Starting in 2020

Quote:
Today's two top-level Le Mans Prototypes, the Porsche 919 and the Toyota TS050 (shown above), use hybrid drivetrains to offer staggering performance. Soon, LMP1 cars will be required to use even more electric propulsion. In a new set of regulations announced today, the World Endurance Championship (WEC) governing body revealed that it will require LMP1 hybrids to run portions of races on electric-only power starting in 2020.

The new rules stipulate that all LMP1 hybrids will be required to run one kilometer at full race pace in electric-only mode after each refueling pit stop. Additionally, these cars will be required to finish each race in electric mode, though the FIA says the details of this requirement are still being worked out. The WEC is working on a rapid recharge system so these new LMP1 hybrids can get extra battery charge during pit stops.

Today's LMP1 cars are capable of running solely on electric power, but they only do so for short amounts of time, and certainly not at racing speed. WEC organizers say these new regulations help relate LMP1 machines to the hybrid and electric road cars currently being offered and developed by automakers.

"It is the conviction of the manufacturers that plug-in hybrids are what they will be selling in five years' time," Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones, head of the FIA endurance commission, toldAutosport. "More and more cities are closing their roads to cars that are not zero emissions, so this rule gives a new dimension to our regulations."

The FIA and WEC are also aiming to reduce the cost of LMP1 development, in an attempt to attract more manufacturers to the series. Running a competitive LMP1 hybrid program costs nearly as much as fielding a Formula 1 team.

One big step towards reducing LMP1 costs is the introduction of movable aerodynamics. Currently, LMP1 cars are required to have fixed aero, with teams allowed to use two different aerodynamic packages throughout the WEC season. With movable aerodynamic devices, teams will be able to adjust the cars for each race, without having to develop and test two separate aerodynamic packages.

Among other cost-cutting measures, the WEC is reducing the amount of test days and wind-tunnel hours available to LMP1 teams. The maximum amount of staff allowed on hand at each race will be reduced from 65 to 50, though personnel limits will still be waived for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The FIA and WEC have a tricky balancing act on their hands—right now, Porsche and Toyota's LMP1 hybrids are easily the most advanced sports racing cars currently in competition, but massive development costs make competing in this sphere prohibitive for many teams. Following Audi's withdrawal from the WEC last year, the series needs to think about ways to expand LMP1 and foster competition in this flagship class.

Lopez Leads Toyota 1-2 in FP3

Quote:

Toyota Gazoo Racing swept Free Practice 3 on Saturday morning at the Nürburgring with Jose Maria Lopez setting the fastest lap in the final session ahead of qualifying.

The Argentinian set a lap time of 1:38.969 in the 60-minute session, although was three tenths slower than the fastest time of the weekend so far set by Porsche’s Brendon Hartley in FP2.

Kazuki Nakajima followed suit to put the pair of Toyota TS050 Hybrids 1-2 at the top of the timesheets, going 0.427 seconds slower than his teammate.

Timo Bernhard was the fastest Porsche driver, 1.666 seconds off the pace in his No. 2 Porsche 919 Hybrid, while Neel Jani put the sister car in fourth.

Vaillante Rebellion topped the LMP2 ranks with times improving multiple times throughout the session, although a lap of 1:46.017 from Bruno Senna remained the best until the checkered flag.

The top seven cars in class went faster than Friday’s pacesetter.

Of note, the No. 31 Rebellion Oreca 07 Gibson returned to action after missing FP2 due to an accident in the opening session.

Olivier Pla and Ford Chip Ganassi Racing outpaced Davide Rigon’s AF Corse entry in GTE-Pro, with the Frenchman setting the fastest time of the weekend so far, 1.5 seconds quicker than the previous pace.

The Ford GTs and Ferrari 488 GTEs locked out the top four positions in class.

Matteo Cairoli was fastest in GTE-Am with the Dempsey-Proton Racing Porsche, while Miguel Molina was second in the Spirit of Race Ferrari.

Qualifying gets underway at 2:55 p.m. local time.
