Sam Micheals out, Patrick Head retiring, will it make a difference at Williams?
Hard to watch that one great team go through this incredible downfall, can they ever get it back?
Never should have let Newey walk away when he wanted the technical director position that Head refused to give up at the time.

I couldn't agree more Legend. I was a huge fan of Williams for years. As a privateer team they seem to do a mediocre job now and it's sad to watch their decline. It was great to watch them give McLaren and Ferrari fits with their engineering prowess back in the 80's and 90's.

Chief I'm a Williams fan also (I still have my Nelson Piquet/Williams World Champion sweatshirt). They did some amazing innovations and really dominated the sport with the FW07/11/14/15/17/18 and picked some good drivers as well. FW is also a no-BS kind of guy who truly loves racing.

Williams yes, Piquet NO!

Williams's downfall has more to do with Frank and Patrick's insistence on staying independent over the last few years as manufacturers took over the sport. Once BMW decided to split, that was it.

Forgot you're dislike Piquet.
I'm not a fan but gotta say when I saw him in the garages at the Detroit Grand Prix in the basement of Cobo Hall, he was a fun loving guy (women, jokes,...). He seemed very playful, walk over to the McLaren area and man they were as serious as they come. Dennis, Barnard, Lauda, Prost all standing around going through the data (on paper strip chart no less ).

, agree. I wonder if BMW and Williams had had a more harmonious relationship like McLaren and Mercedes then the results would have been different.

I've met Piquet a couple of times and both times, he was a flaming douchebag. Now that he and his son torpedoed Renault (perhaps rightfully so but so long F1 career), I dislike him even more. Don't worry, everyone's entitled to their opinions!

I too miss the days when Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell were go head to head with Aryton Senna at Mcleren. I think the FW14 was probably one of the most advanced cars made.

^^actually it was the FW14B that was the most advanced car made. That was the car that carried Prost to his 4th title (and had the Sega ad on the side of the car that made it look like the driver had cartoon feet).

Also loved the Sega ad on the side as well

The engine choice also plays a major part in the poor performance lately.
It would make a hell of a difference with a Williams-Mercedes or a Williams-Renault, rather than with Toyota and Cosworth.

What a dilemma.
Staying independent ends up with crappy engine choice, which gives poor race results. This causes the Williams stock price to drop like a rock, and may soon threaten survivability. It's like a bottomless pit to fall in.

Agree on the MB (good) and Cosworth (not so good), but disagree on the Renault and Toyota. IIRC both of those motors were basically on par for performance. A fre motorsport writers last year commented that the Renault engine was only mid-field in overall performance judging from straight-line speed of the RB and Renault F1 cars.
