WHAT? Holy shit I remember him just recently winning the Indy 500 in that epic last lap and his interview on Letterman. Seemed like a really nice, cool guy.

AP has a story on the huge 15-car wreck at the Las Vegas track, and confirmed Wheldon's death.

RIP Dan Weldon

We lost a great guy in racing today. The wreck at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway was horrific.

To him and his family I wish all the best to them.

RIP Dan Wheldon.

Wow, I can't believe it.... Will Power, Pippa Mann, and JR Hildebrand are all in the hospital too. Hoping for the best...

Dan Wheldon.

Here's the crash... it's quite horrific so please prepare yourself before watching it.... one of the worst accidents I've seen in a long time..

http://youtu.be/YcAZ7I_lk7M

Associated Press

October 16, 2011, 3:05 p.m.
LAS VEGAS -- Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died Sunday in a fiery 15-car wreck at Las Vegas Motor Speedway when his car flew over another on Lap 13 and smashed into the wall just outside turn 2.

Wheldon was 33. Drivers were told of Wheldon's death in a meeting about two hours after the fiery, smoky crash that many drivers said was the worst they had ever seen.

He won the Indianapolis 500 twice, including this year.

"IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries," IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners, have decided to end the race. In honor of Dan Wheldon, the drivers have decided to do a five-lap salute to in his honor."

Three other drivers, including championship contender Will Power, were hurt in the pileup.

The wreck left Townsend Bell upside down and smoldering cars and debris littered the track nearly halfway up the straightaway of the 1.5-mile oval.

The track was red-flagged following the accidents while crews worked on fences and removed smashed cars.

Wheldon started in the back of the pack but quickly worked his way through the 34-car field before the wreck.

"It was like a movie scene which they try to make as gnarly as possible," said Danica Patrick, making her final IndyCar start. "It was debris everywhere across the whole track, you could smell the smoke, you could see the billowing smoke on the back straight from the car. There was a chunk of fire that we were driving around. You could see cars scattered.

Drivers had been concerned about the high speeds at the track, where they were hitting nearly 225 mph during practice.

Their concerns became reality when contact on Turn 2 sent cars flying through the air, crashing into each other and into the outside wall and catch fence.

"I'll tell you, I've never seen anything like it," Ryan Briscoe said. "The debris we all had to drive through the lap later, it looked like a war scene from Terminator or something. I mean, there were just pieces of metal and car on fire in the middle of the track with no car attached to it and just debris everywhere. So it was scary, and your first thoughts are hoping that no one is hurt because there's just stuff everywhere. Crazy."

Yeah, that was a bad wreck. Was that afer a re-start or something? Lots of cars together in packs.

Differnt vid with a couple of replays. You can see at 0:08 and at 2:35 a white car mid-track spins and collects the pack he's running with; it's a somewhat separate incident from the initial crash along the wall.

That pack is essentially what both Power (black car low side) and the Weldon (white car mid track) hit that sent them airborne. The progression is clearer in the overhead veiw at ~2:35.

It happened so fast that the spotter wouldn't have been any help anyway.

The 5 lap tribute was very touching

On one of the YouTube video's you can hear the spotters telling their drives to go low numerous times but it happened so fast.

Watched the one video posted by BearCat94 at at 2:35 you can see there was nothing he could do as the car directly in front of him braked with him close behind. The car went into the catch fencing for quite a distance.

Thoughts and prayers for his wife, sons and family.

Dan Wheldon. I had the privilege of meeting (and racing!) with Dan back in June at an Acura event. Dan was an incredibly nice guy and very generous with his time and attention. He was definitely one of the great ones.

My condolences and prayers go out to his family. May he rest in peace.

sometimes these things are too fast. I remember a few years ago at either texas or michigan they complained about the speed and g forces that would make a normal person black out. i don't recall what happened but it needs to really be looked at now.

That was Texas in 2001. They cancelled the race right before it was to start. I remember, because I was there.

it's crazy how they are/were talking about the race and the events leading up to the crash, it's almost like they knew something bad was gonna happen... like they knew it was an accident waiting to happen....

yea, i read a lot of the drivers were worried about the high speeds/close racing.

Danica said you either go flat out or wuss out and lift. she said she lifted.

Yea this track is to fast for its own good

What really pisses me off, is ESPN has shown very little about this tragedy, YET they keep talking about, and having interviews about the stupid hand shake between Niners coach and the Lions coach which was nothing. Fox News has shown and reported on this incident repeatedly with great respect for Dan

ESPN you should be ashamed.

Horrible. Sad.

Preventable. Too many cars in that race...for a high speed oval.
