Thats pretty cool. Please excuse my ignorance but where are the sparks coming from? I assume they are just for show, yes?

the sparks are probably from the underside of the car scraping against the track. Sometimes the down-force plus an uneven track can do it too.

The diffuser on the back-underside of the car creates more downforce across the car's underbody the closer the car is to the ground. The cars are therefore setup to run as close as possible to the road surface. That's the simple version. There's actually a whole lot more to it than that.

Cool video.

Of course we don't get sparks these days, since the underside of the car has wood planks.

Metal sparks > Saw dust

F1 cars (at least in the last season during the Singapore GP) still spit out sparks. the rear part of the car, right around the rear axle, has bodywork that touch the track at high speed on one section of the Singapore GP circuit. and the sparks do fly

You're right. The low light probably helps it be more visible.

If i remeber right they used tungsten to get the weight (ballast) as low to the ground as possible. So in other words the sparks are from the tungsten on the bottom plank.
