It meant a lot for him, and the celebrations on the streets of Maranello were cool too.

I hate Ferrari, but it was pretty emotional. Prince Albert spraying champagne was not expected and probably against protocol, but nobody was going to stop him.

One weird thing was that Prince Albert was singing the Monaco anthem during the ceremony, but then when they played the Italian anthem, it appeared that he was still singing.

Well, the House of Grimaldi originated from Italy. So maybe he has some sort of secondary allegiance to Italy.

FIA'S BEN SULAYEM ADVISES ANDRETTI TO "BUY ANOTHER F1 TEAM"

Andretti was refused a 2026 entry by F1 after the FIA had admitted its application on a technical basis. Ben Sulayem was proponent of expanding F1's grid of 10 teams, opening up a tender process that only Andretti passed. “We have a contract, and our contract says we have up to 12 teams," he told Motorsport.com last year. "So, we are not breaking the rules. We are, on the contrary, fulfilling the rules." He also said it was his dream to fill up all 12 slots by adding a manufacturer outfit from the US and from China. That vision put him at odds with F1 management and owner Liberty Media, who don't believe Andretti's entry would be competitive or add significant value to the series as an expansion team.

Speaking to Reuters in Monaco, Ben Sulayem has now changed his stance and advised Michael Andretti to buy an existing outfit rather than persist in his efforts to join as an 11th team."I have no doubt FOM and Liberty would love to see other teams as long as they are OEMs," he said. "I would advise [Andretti] to go and buy another team, not to come as the 11th team. I feel that some teams need to be refreshed. What is better? To have 11 teams as a number or 10 and they are strong? I still believe we should have more teams but not any teams. The right teams. It’s not about the number, it’s about the quality."

Ben Sulayem said he would still welcome Andretti and its partner General Motors in principle, suggesting the tie-up would bring more to the sport than some of F1's current outfits. "Without mentioning names, there are teams which are struggling. Struggling with performance, struggling even with management," he added.

"It’s about having the right team, not to lose a chance or an opportunity where someone like GM with a PU is coming to Formula 1. Imagine the impact. We have three races in America. We have such a huge fan base. But we don’t have a proper [US] team. I’m so happy to have Ford in [with Red Bull] but imagine having GM and imagine having [more] American drivers."

The change of stance over Andretti could be perceived as an effort to get on the same page with FOM and Liberty Media, given that Ben Sulayem has thus far endured a frosty relationship with the commercial rights holder over a variety of conflicts. That is especially relevant amid talks to put together a new Concorde Agreement that stipulates how the series will be run on a commercial level and needs renewing ahead of 2026. "Peace is always good, you can’t have all the time unnecessary issues," Ben Sulayem acknowledged. "We both understand that we need to go forward and the only way to go forward is to have much more clarity between us. We are with FOM when it comes to business. We are partners and we have to also forget the small things and find a solution how can we address these issues."

F1 has formally left the door ajar for Andretti to try and apply again for 2028, if GM is ready to deliver a works power unit. But Andretti has not taken no for an answer and continued its aggressive push to join for 2026, opening a UK base in Silverstone and signing former F1 technical director Pat Symonds as a consultant. It has also involved several US senators and representatives to challenge F1's rejection on legal grounds by invoking anti-trust laws, an escalation that hasn't gone down well at F1.

Really weird how Andretti would not “be competitive or add significant value to the series.” But they're fine if they buy an existing team. Sounds like Andretti is not the non-competitive team...

Sulayem doesn't wanna lessen the payouts to the existing teams by adding a 11th. Do agree with his statements

The right teams. It’s not about the number, it’s about the quality.

"Without mentioning names, there are teams which are struggling. Struggling with performance, struggling even with management,"
Currently the bottom 7 teams points summed together is still less than RBR by itself (276 to 271) , the racing competition has been weak for awhile.

The FIA doesn't care about payouts, since that's from the commercial rights holder.

It's baffling that Sulayem has done a 180 on his stance. I'm thinking he got the bribe he was looking for. Or, he completely misjudged the situation, and with the US government getting involved, it's going to open more than the single can of worms that he was planning on.

Except, how much would the payout be reduced, split 11 ways, if the total pot gets bigger by adding an 11th team?
While we don't want 3 lap down mobile chicanes, expecting a new team to come out swinging for podiums is a little unrealistic, IMO.

Haas best results by year:
2016: 5th
2017: 6th
2018: 4th
2019: 6th
2020; 9th
2021; 12th
2022: 5th
2023: 7th
With many more non-points finishes & DNFs than not.

Hard not to base a comparison on the last new entry team as the bar to clear.

I've said the same thing to a few people: Haas sucks and if there's any team that needs new owners, it's that one. How can FOM be concerned about Andretti bringing down the value of the sport by being new? What a bunch of hypocrites, at one point they were all new except maybe Ferrari, MBZ and Alfa Romeo

Esteban Ocon and Alpine will part ways at the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season, ending a five-year relationship.

Ocon, 27, joined the Enstone-based team in 2020 and went on to achieve his and Alpine’s first Grand Prix win when he triumphed in the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix.

He picked up two further podiums – at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix and 2023 Monaco Grand Prix – and achieved a best year-end finish of eighth in 2022.

However, Alpine boss Bruno Famin has been considering the options for his 2025 driver line-up in recent months and the French manufacturer has decided not to renew Ocon’s contract.

Alpine said they will announce their 2025 line-up in “due course” while Ocon – who will continue to race for Alpine for the remainder of the season – said he would confirm his future “soon”.

Ocon added: “It’s been a significant period of my life to be racing at this team in Formula 1. While I’ve been here for five years as a full-time racing driver, my professional career started at Enstone back when I was a teenager, so it will always be a special place for me.

“We have had some great moments together, some tough moments as well, and I am certainly grateful to everyone at the team for these memorable times. I will announce my plans very soon but, in the meantime, my full focus is on delivering on track for this team and having a successful remainder of the season.”

Team Principal Bruno Famin said: “We would like to firstly thank Esteban for his commitment to the team for the past five years. During his time, we have celebrated some fantastic moments together, the best of which coming at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix with a memorable race win.

“We still have 16 races to complete in 2024 together with a clear objective: to continue to work tirelessly as a team to push for the best on-track results. We wish Esteban the very best for the next chapter of his driving career when that moment comes.”

The news comes after a difficult race weekend for Alpine in Monaco, when Ocon collided with Pierre Gasly on the first lap, earning him a five-place grid penalty for this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix.

Ocon released a statement saying he has been “deeply saddened by the amount of abuse and negativity” he received following the collision.

Sources say that the decision to part ways with Ocon was not a response to the Monaco clash as his future has been under discussion for a while, however naturally, such an incident did not help.

Ocon in my mind, has had one foot out the door ever since he started. He was always banging in to his team mate, esp. Perez. Good riddance, I hope no one picks him up.

HAHAHAHAHAHA

Granted, Stroll should've been the first to get shit canned, but I'll take it. I've never liked Ocon, and 100% agree with Chief - I hope no one picks him up.

Ocon is a mystery to me, when Alonso joined Alpine in 2021 Ocon was competitive with him (FA 81: EO 74) and in 2022 Ocon outscored Alonso (92-81). However his recklessness didn't do him any favors within his teams, supposedly while at Alpine Prost and Ocon's race engineer tried to work with him on overall race craft and strategy. Also like Hamilton his family was middle or lower middle class and they supported him by selling their home. Then all his crashes and such as well as the Gasly feud which makes no sense what so ever.

I need to watch that (I'm a huge Gilles fan), quite a tragic racing tale. Both driver's should have won the 1982 WDC but due to both driver's foolishness it didn't happen.

Dang, don't have either.
Maybe get lucky while in CA & the house we're staying in, or the BnB will have one or the other.

Crazy that Red Bull signed Perez to two more years. Thought for sure they'd want to bring someone like Sainz in.

I was shocked to see that too.
Wonder if the contract has a seat swap clause in it & maybe Yuki gets a RBR shot if Perez isn't delivering.

I'm guessing it was a safe #2 choice for Max. Apparently not only did Carlos and Max not get along at Toro Rossi but their dad's didn't get along as well. As much as many (most?) RBR personnel don't like Jos, he's still Max's dad.
IIRC Perez also brings in some RBR sponsorship money too. End of 2023, I thought Perez was gone from RBR end of 2024.

Unbelievable. As a Red Bull fan, I'm hugely disappointed. I hope that RB has a clause that if they don't win the constructor's championship this year they could null the contract in December.

Really telling how they currently feel about Ricciardo. I'll be surprised if he lasts another year.

I doubt Ricciardo lasts to the end of this year. If he doesn't get replaced, it also indicates a lack of any prospects in the Red Bull Academy.

New renderings of the 2026 rules car.

Will be narrower and lighter to make it nimbler.

I'm hoping the revised fuel flow management and ~1/2 ICE and ~1/2 MGU-K powertrains doesn't result in worst energy saving racing.

Also don't expect to see Daniel in 2024 no matter how much a crowd pleaser he is, Yoki is ~4x in points and driving more consistently than him. A decade ago DR was on top of the world besting a 4-time WDC and coming #3 in WDC twice. Now he's planted at the back.

The current cars can barely make it around the hairpin at Monaco, it's gotten a bit ridiculous. Would be nice to see some real change here. Hopefully, not just an inch or two.

Key word is a decade ago. Every driver has a shelf life. Time to retire to V8.

Remember when DR made ironic comment to Lando "I'm going to end you" in the paddock after it was announced he was leaving Renault for McLaren? It was a ironic if silly comment for Daniel to make on his future much less experienced teammate who then outscored him .

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/oth...is/ar-BB1kXG7Y

Some interesting insights from Damon Hill on the slow slide from DR.

I've had a theory for awhile that racing drivers' abilities start to decline not due to age, but after getting married. Ricciardo has been dating Gerhard Berger's daughter for awhile. So waiting for the wedding announcement soon.
