just as I predicted . . .

no cars running at the end of qualifying!! that is the stupidest result of the FIA's new tinkering with a perfectly good qualifying format. Fuck.

Yeah, I got to agree, this has got to be the dumbest format ever!

Looks like the boneheaded quali might not be an issue for much longer.

Worst qualifying ever. So stupid. Disgusting. I feel bad for anyone stayed up late to watch that fiasco.

I enjoyed new qualifying format, not sure why commentators are being such whiney bitches besides being old and hating change.

The cars seemed to all end up where they deserved to be.

I already thought qualifying was more exciting than the races, and this just makes it even more exciting. I tend to fall asleep during races, but not qualifying.

Hope they don't change qualifying back because of crybabies.

I expect most viewers with take position of the announcers since ppl can't make their own decisions and rely on media to form their opinions for them.

No one forces teams to sit in pits till time runs out, they could just do a pit stop like in a race and go right back out.

Omg there were no cars running for last minute omg. I guess having cars like Mercedes waiting till 3 minutes left to even leave pits is fine? Then the Mercedes are on track even less.

New format is exciting at beginning. Old format you don't even really watch till q3 anyway.

Nothing like an empty track to get you excited about F1. What a mistake.

First, the new rule would only permit 2
Cars to run at the end
Of the session not the last 10 which was the former rule. The time to do an installation lap and a flyer prohibited the fastest 4 from going back out so they didn't thereby forcing the drivers to accept their positions with nearly 4
Minutes left. The best 5 minutes of an entire GP weekend was trashed and it's not bc of "whiney" commentators but idiotic rule
Makers. I hope that bbc report
Is correct bc Q3 used to be my favorite part of the weekend.

Wow, so I finally got to watch qual on the DVR... What a joke!

I will say that perhaps an unintended consequence of the new format (and I'm sure Bernie was not too happy about it) was that the back markers got a bit more airtime than they would have with the old format. That must be good for their sponsors!

But how boring that whole thing was... Basically watching one car go around at a time.

On the new rule, it finally made me watch all of Q3 and Q2. I used to FF to the last two minutes of Q3 and Q2 because that's when all the action happened. However, the trade off wasn't worth the complete lack of excitement in Q1.

Back to the old qualifying format, and I must say, (even as a Hamilton fan) the race today was pretty exciting. Should be a good season if the races this season have the battles like they did today! Also how about HASS!!

Without saying too much, this race more than invalidated the qualifying procedure.

Glad Alonso was okay. That was quite a shunt.

Where would Vettel have finished if he didn't lose his advantage with the Alonso red flag and the botched put stop. I'd say at least second.

Quite the good race.

Alonso incident was pretty terrifying for a moment until he crawled out. I was astonished.

Haas finish so high in the points was awesome! Hope they keep that intensity throughout the season.

And Kimi's lackadaisical exit from his burning car...

I think Vettel very well could have taken the race if not for the botched pit.

Not a bad start to the season!

yeah that was quite a shunt for Alonso, also glad he was OK. I gotta wonder watching the crash in slow motion, the car seems to start to roll when it enters the gravel trap and then digs in on the left side which vaults the chassis. I thought most tracks were using asphalt run-off areas. Those two barrel rolls were pretty traumatic.

Gotta love the Kimster,

Not a big Ferrari fan they made a great start for both driver's only to have tire strategy mess them up.
I like Arrivabene and Vettel.

Should be a good season, and Hass being 6th was a great start for a new team.

Only sad point was McLaren/Honda which were running ~10-12 place

FWIW, this explains what the new 2016 F1 start single clutch launch is all about

I don't think it was a bad strategy. Vettel's strategy was to use the super soft tires to build up a big enough lead prior to the last stop, but that was wiped out when the safety car came out for Alonso, so on the restart, Rosberg was right behind Vettel. Then the botched pit stop lost more time.

Alonso was doing pretty good until he crashed.

^^^ Ferrari went too aggressive with the tire and got caught out with the wrong compound. If they'd gone medium, it would have been a different story. However, it's nice seeing Ferrari go for it instead of just trying to accumulate points.

Opinions? At least it's better looking than the halo seen on the Ferrari.

Agreed-it is better looking than Ferrari's version, however, it cannot be implemented before 2018 due to lack of testing relative to the one Ferrari tracked in Australia.

Not bad, but both look like they would hinder ingress/egress from the car under normal circumstances; assuming it would be a permanently fixed piece.

Stupid elimination qualifying remains in place for the next race. To be evaluated afterwards.

Sounds like the same knockout format for Bahrain for Q1 & Q2, then back to last years format for Q3.

Hopefully the GPDA tries to flex some muscle before the weekend. Maybe the drivers can strike or something because that was horrible for the fans and competition. The letter the GPDA published was a start but now they need to show they are serious.

Interesting, but looking at the start of the race it appeared Hamilton's slow start had something to do with it too. We'll see as the season progresses. You know what they say. It's not how you start...

Formula One Might Replace Ferrari's Home Grand Prix With New Race In Las Vegas

The photo gallery is really good, alot of those pics I've never seen before.

I love the title of the photo exhibit: "James Hunt: Girls, Beer and Victory"

As an Austinite, I'm glad Las Vegas wouldn't replace the USGP in Austin, but I can't imagine Ferrari wanting to lose Monza.

Monza will never go away-it's typical Bernie M.O. Spout a bunch of inflammatory BS to get organizers to come up with a King's ransom, re-sign new deal, race goes on.

, IIRC Monza's race fee's are ~1/2 the average and Bernie's been trying to get them to double for the past decade.

Next to Monaco, Italy is the next most important GP event of the year.

Monaco, I'd be the most sad to see leave the calendar.
It's #1 on my bucket list of races to see in person.

Monaco is the only venue that doesn't pay to host the race so guess what? It ain't going anywhere. If you ever need information on how to spectate that race 00TL-P3.2 I'd be happy to help.
