Formula 3: General News & Discussion Thread

The BRDC British F3 car will run an IndyCar-style ‘shark fin’ device positioned in front of the driver in 2020, but won’t switch to a halo next season.

IndyCar introduced the shark fin – which is around three inches tall and deflects debris away from the drivers head – for the 2019 season in lieu of a halo, and it has already proved effective. It will introduce the halo-equivalent aeroscreen developed by Red Bull Advanced Technologies for 2020

BRDC British F3 introduced its current Tatuus-Cosworth car for the 2016 season, and has been in discussion with the FIA to become an official Regional F3 Championship since those rules were introduced for this season. That would require a switch to a car with a halo.

But the championship is yet to secure that status, and in the meantime Jonathan Palmer, chief executive of Motor Sport Vision, which operates the championship, is keen to keep costs down for the teams

“The key thing is we were working in co-ordination with the teams to understand what teams would like to see in terms of future development with the car and in terms of cost,” ex-Formula 1 driver Palmer told Motorsport.com.

“We are certainly open and we would like to upgrade our British F3 cars to the latest FIA technical regulations.

“We put proposals forward to the FIA for a new British F3 car which used a halo car and that is still due to be considered and discussed. But until that happens our current car is doing a very good job.”

Alongside the shark fin for next season, the series will issue updated aerodynamics for its car, including a revised rear wing which the teams are hoping will allow drivers to follow more closely in turbulent air.

“We felt we needed to do something [regarding head protection], we couldn’t get the halo so the next best thing was to do that [the shark fin],” said Lanan Racing team boss, Graham Johnson.

Fellow team boss Wayne Douglas of Douglas Motorsport added: “I think there might be more drag so the slipstream could be bigger and there’s more of a chance to pass.

“The problem was on the old configuration we were maxed out on the rear wings 90% of the time so this gives us a lot of options to change the cars.

“I don’t think it will make a huge difference [to the performance], you’re probably talking a couple of tenths [per lap] at maximum.”

A total of 18 drivers took part in the British series this year, with Clement Novalak taking the crown with junior single-seater giant Carlin.

British F3's decision not to adopt Regional F3 regs means that the series could lose the Formula 3 name, having already been granted an extension to use it in 2019 by the FIA.

But Palmer is keen that the name should remain and hopeful that the governing body agrees.

“Certainly we’re hopeful that British F3 retains the F3 title,” he added.

“In Britain we’ve got a long history with the British F3 name, it’s understood by the drivers, teams and public, everyone understands it. There’s no real reason why we shouldn’t keep it.”

The 2020 British F3 calendar was also revealed last month, and remains unchanged from this season.

The championship will begin at Oulton Park and include visits to Snetterton, Silverstone (twice), Donington Park (twice), Spa and Brands Hatch.

Sophia Floersch will become the first woman to race in the Formula 3 series, after she signed with Campos Racing for the 2020 season, less than 18 months after suffering spinal injuries in a horrific crash at the 2018 Macau Grand Prix.

The 19-year-old underwent surgery following the huge crash and made a full recovery, before competing in the Formula Regional European Championship, where she finished seventh.

The German went on to compete in the 2019 Macau Grand Prix, completing a remarkable comeback, for which she was presented with the Laureus World Sports Award for World Comeback of the Year. She will be the first woman to race in the category since the current F3 championship was created from the merger of GP3 and European F3 in 2019.

“I am very happy to be competing in the FIA F3 Championship together with Campos Racing,” Flörsch said. “It is going to be my first season in the actual Formula 3 car with Pirelli tires, DRS and the Mecachrome engine.

“Without any test days I have to learn a lot, but I am looking forward to competing against the best drivers.

“For me, it’s important to get better each race weekend, work together with the team and have fun. It’s going to be a great year. The experience of Adrian Campos and his team will for sure help me.”

The Grünwald-born racer made her single-seater debut back in 2015, when she joined the Ginetta Junior championship and became the youngest driver to win a race in the series. Flörsch also became the first female driver to secure point-paying finishes in ADAC Formula 4.

Floersch will join Alex Peroni and Alessio Deledda at the Spanish side, which was founded by former Minardi F1 driver Adrian Campos.

Schumacher, the son of ex-Jordan, Williams and Toyota driver Ralf, stepped up to F3 this year after making his debut in the category in Sochi’s 2019 season finale and finishing fourth in the 2019 Formula Regional European Championship.

However, the 18-year-old struggled for pace and competitiveness with Czech outfit Charouz Racing System and didn’t manage to finish higher than 12th at Austria’s Red Bull Ring.

His teammates Roman Stanek and Igor Fraga have also failed to be competitive so far, Fraga scoring the team’s only point by virtue of a 10th place finish in Silverstone.

On Wednesday Ralf Schumacher announced on social media that his son would split with Charouz after another fruitless weekend in Barcelona.

"Big thanks to Charouz Racing Team for supporting my son,” he wrote on Instagram. "We have decided to stop our partnership."

It is not yet known what Schumacher’s future plans are, but his father wrote he was "looking forward to announcing some news soon.”

Earlier on Wednesday, it emerged that fellow German Sophia Floersch will skip August's Spa round in order to take part in the European Le Mans Series race at Paul Ricard.

Floersch will vacate her Campos Racing seat so she can make her LMP2 debut at Le Castellet for the Signatech-run Richard Mille Racing squad, which team boss Philippe Sinault said was vital in Floersch's preparation for her first appearance in September’s Le Mans 24 Hours.

Prema driver Logan Sargeant leads the FIA F3 standings with three weekends left on the 2020 schedule at Spa, Monza and Mugello, just one point ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri.

Australian Piastri scored his second win of the 2020 season in Barcelona’s Sunday sprint race, while Saturday’s first race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was won by HWA's Jake Hughes. American driver Sargeant consolidated his lead by taking third in that feature race.

The FIA Formula 2 and Formula 3 series could be separated next season, with the two championships no longer appearing on the same Grand Prix weekends.

If a plan that is currently being discussed is agreed, the extra track time available would mean that both series would run three races at each meeting at which they feature, instead of two.

It’s understood that a move to separate the series is being considered as teams prepare for another season that will inevitably be impacted by COVID-19, with driver budgets potentially suffering.

One potential financial benefit of splitting the championships would be that teams with entries in both could pool resources between their F2 and F3 operations, and run them with fewer people. Nine of the 11 F2 teams also contest the F3 category.

By holding three races on each weekend both series would also visit fewer circuits during the season than they currently do, which would also contribute to cost savings.

The proposed schedule appears to support Chase Carey’s recent assertion that the 2021 F1 calendar will be similar to the one originally planned for 2020, in that it suggests that there will be nine races in Europe.

The provisional plan is that F2 will do eight race weekends instead of the current 12, with four in Europe and four flyaways, adding up to a total of 24 races – the same as 2020.

F3 would run on seven race weekends, with five in Europe and two flyaways, which are likely to be at the end of the season. That adds up to 21 races, or three more than the total in 2020.

Details of how the three-race format might work are yet to be finalised, but one option could be a split qualifying session, with the first half forming the grid for race one, and the second half creating the grid for race two.

The third race of the weekend would then use the reverse grid format currently used by the F2 sprint, and the second F3 race.

When questioned by Motorsport.com about plans for next season an F2/F3 spokesperson said: “We are currently assessing costs cutting measures for 2021, but nothing has been decided yet. Should decisions be made, we will communicate them in due time.”
