The 4 cylinder turbo's were always a bad idea from a marketing point of view, then again there's also nothing wrong with the 3L V10 or the current 2.4L V8.

Oh I remember, I went to the Detroit Grand Prix from 83 to 88), but it was also a very different era in terms of marketing and engine manufacturers.
The days of Keith Duckworth guesstimated a number like 100K English Pounds to the head of Ford so they could design and develop the DFV are long gone. These days the engine makers want to be in the loop not only from a regulation point of view but also a marketing point of view.
That was the main complaint from Ferrari when FIA wanted the 4 cylinder. When BMW heard the V10 requirement was going to a V8, they were upset since one of the reasons to develope the M-division V10 was their involvement in F1.
BTW, one of my favorite motors from the turbo era was the BMW mostly because it's iron block was sourced from the BMW four cylinder production motor.

As a spectator, I don't see why this makes much of a difference. Its a welcome change, IMO, because perhaps it will toss things up a bit and reorder the grid somewhat. But other than that, I couldn't care less.

The TAG engine was designed and devloped by Porsche but since TAG was a sponsor of McLaren and footed the bill they got their name on the motor.
I liked most of the Turbo motors, Honda V6, Ferrari V6's (both types), the TAG-Porsche, BMW 4, and Renault.
One aspect I will like of the new motors is the sound of the turbo's spooling up to 150K-200K RPM.

The rationale for the change is supposedly energy efficiency. The new formula will use recovered energy (presumably from exhaust) to power the turbochargers, which in turn will boost horsepower. During the Turbo Era of F1 (1977-1988), engines were generally 1.5 liters, and at their peak performance produced anywhere from 1000 to 1500 horsepower. The cars of that era were ungainly crates by modern standards, and were only as quick as they were by virtue of their steroid-driven lumps.

ungainly crates? Senna with his Lotus 97T
I totally disagree with that quote, some of the best looking F1 cars came from that era. McLaren MP4/2, Lotus 97T, Brabham BT52.

They still won't be able to tell you why it sounds different. As long as it sounds loud and has a high pitch, most people won't care what is under the car.
