CART or IRL
Who's into U.S. open wheel racing and which series do you follow ? I love CART, with their turbo charged engines and racing primarily on road courses on several continents. I think the IRL is a joke, minor league engines racing on ovals week after week. Unfortunately they have the Indy 500 and that is the race every sponsor wants their teams at which has created problems for CART. I wish we had one series again.

Champ Cars use engines provided by Ford, Honda and Toyota. These tiny engines are 2.65-liter overhead-cam turbocharged V-8s producing approximately 900 horsepower at 16,000 rpm. Teams lease their engines from the manufacturers, who maintain them with a team of their own technicians at the track and in their factories. Specific details of the engines are tightly guarded secrets.
They ran ~246+ at Indianapolis in '95-'96!! Team Marlboro had them.

CART I dig. But i don't enjoy quite as thoroughly as F1.
On TV it all looks gravy... but
After attending the Montreal Formula 1 Grand Prix this year followed by the CART Molson Indy in Toronto...... their two totally different worlds.
F1 OWNZ LIVE.
Although, CART is quite... umm... pleasent on the ears... hehe... the engines sound weak and tired. Not an incredibly pleasing sound... but very quite in comparison to a screaming F1 car.
We sat front row behind the pits in Toronto... THAT was cool.
Regardless... I do dig CART, wish I had seen Zanardi in person.
In fact, I just got done playing SEGA Flag to Flag racing
Heres some shots from the Molson Indy.
AND the money shots of Ashley Judd bending over in front of us

tony George Aztec. IRL=Indy Retirement League and IMHO, bushleague series. I cannot stand and will not watch the IRL b/c it took the best open wheel series in the US and fractured it at a time when CART was really gaining momentum internationally as well. I've been to Fontana (2x Miller Lite suite next to Penske's); Toronto (dozens); Mid-Ohio; Michigan; a 500 miler at Pocono; and we are going to Montreal in August. I love CART almost one-tenth as much as I LOOOOOOVE F1. WOOooHOoo! Monza here I come (September).

CART is dead!! They are losing Honda and Toyota next year. They only have 1 motor. If anything, CART will merge with IRL, otherwise they have no chance to survive. When Hondo and Toyota decided to go to IRL, it was a stake in the heart for CART!

if your anywhere close to the race, even with ear plugs F1 cars are deafening (sp?)
not only that, but the field gets soooo spread out that cars are passing you non-stop.
its like a dentist drilling on your teeth for 3 hours non stop.
but its soooooooo cool.

Anyome that knows, how does the sound of F1 cars compare to NHRA fuel cars?
I would imagine the fuel cars are louder.
(not making any call as too which is "better", just trying to get a volume comparo)

And Manufactures are moving on too IRL. You can wish and dream all you want, there isn't enough demand for 2 racing leagues!!! Which ever one has the advantage, the other one will go by the way side. The down hill fall has begun for CART...

I like F1 for pure racing, but the NHRA is incredible in person. Stand at the rails at the 1/8 mile (about 100 feet fom the track here in Houston) as the fuel cars go by and it feels like the sound wave is going to knock you down.
NHRA is more like a roller coaster ride, fun purely for the visceral experience.

IRL is much more americanized then the rest... thats why it does well.
Not only that, but because one can sit in the stands and SEE the WHOLE race. Thats why ovals are popular...
street/road courses spectators get very limited action unless you pay BIG BUCKS for the money seats.
that is why IRL is so popular to the average nascar lovin joe.

i believe that too.
i have a hard time believing many people would actually follow IRL. nobody cares about it. heh
but at the same time for the average person just wanting to see a local race... you do probably get a little more bang for your buck with IRL assuming it draws in a crowd.
simple fact that ya see more action.
watching cart or F1 on a road course is sorta like watching boxing from top row on the balcony... ya would get a better view on TV.
dont get me wrong, I love watching both live... the people... the sounds... mmmm. but ya really dont get much action.
