LMP1 teams urged into more series
By Kevin Turner Thursday, June 11th 2009, 12:13 GMT
A new award to encourage LMP1 teams to contest events in more than one sportscar championship is set to be launched by Le Mans organiser the ACO.
The Intercontinental Trophy will combine events in the American Le Mans Series, the European-based LMS, and the Asian LMS.
The trophy, which is set to launch next season, will encompass between six and eight races, though these have yet to be selected.
ACO general manager Remy Brouard said: "The 24 Hours will not be part of it, but the trophy will be for the major manufacturers or big teams. If there is a problem [for 2010] it'll happen in 2011."

Let's say the FOTA teams abandon F1 for 2010, where would they go? The ACO has already stated that they would (obviously) welcome FOTA to participate in 2010, even with the drafting of rules. Commentators have stated that it would be impossible, and too costly, for FOTA to start their own championship in 2010 with such short notice. However, the ACO already has the infrastructure pretty much in place. In addition, it is already kind of out of the reach of the FIA's power. Could we see FOTA run along the ACO's Intercontinental Trophy as a "support race" in 2010?
These days, the difference between F1 and LMP cars are minimal. As we've seen with the Audi R15, Peugeot 908, and Acura ARX-02a, they are basically formula cars with wheel covers. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch for FOTA to slap wheel covers on their F1 cars, get rid of the second seat rule, get rid of the two driver rule for sprint races, and we would have a F1-LMP hybrid series in 2010.
All my speculation of course.
