Nearly, shame for the birthday boy.

Yesterday there were 6 cars out of 20 that didn't finish the race. That's 33% of the cars obviously. It did make for a little more exciting race but is that why 1) VER won, 2). Alonso went from pit lane to 8th, 3). VET went from 6th to 3rd, 4). Haas got their biggest points haul of their existence, and 5). Sauber got both cars in the top 10 at the finish? Ditch the 3 DRS zones (every straight) and ditch the "reliability" rules. Back in the old days, their was a quali engine, spare chassis, etc. to get through the weekend. Now It's all about reliability and usually, dullness.

Was watching some old Top Gear the other night, maybe Clarkson had a good idea.

Pay the drivers $50k/season. They get $1M for each overtake. :drag:

It does make you wonder if relaxing the rules/formula a bit would make for some more action. Whether that's opening up the engine rules (max displacement for NA/FI, open cyl count), tire choices (may be tough on Pirelli to have to supply multiple compounds), aero, etc.

I don't know, having lived through the one engine for practically everybody on the grid era (Ford DFV's) to 1.5L turbocharged 4 cylinder, to 8,10 & 12 cylinder engines to now I'm not so sure relaxing the rules gets more passing. It's always been a battle of the haves vs. the have-nots and the latter have always lost. I remember Mansell in Canada was so far ahead of everyone on the final lap he was coasting around waving when his car stalled and he didn't finish even though he was more than 3/4 of a lap ahead of everyone else. Ditto the years of Honda/McLaren with Prost/Senna or the Schu years with Ferrari wrapping up the title before Belgium.
