First Time Filing Taxes...Need Help
This is going to be my first year where I file my taxes and I have just a couple of questions. First off I'm a full time student in CT and lived there for 9 months out of the year(dormed) and that is where I work, but I'm origionally from NY. Are both states going to try and tax me? Also, are places like H&R Block and tax programs reliable or even worth the money? I'm kind of apprehensive to do this by myself and would like some help. Any input would be great.

You're 21, probably single and without much income. There are websites where you can file for free. Tax filing is not rocket science in your case. I don't think you have to file anything in NY as you spend the majority of the year in CT and that's where you generated the income.

file for state taxes where ever you did the work. you shouldn't pay or owe NY taxes if you worked in CT.
And in your case, H&R Block and other tax prep places probably won't be worth that much to you.

Try taxact. it's free online. Almost forgot to mention. don't forget to get your 1098-T. Get that and do a education credit thing called hope and lifetime learning (form 8863). You'll get lots of moola back from that.
