In all honesty, in the initial months, I didn't even think about which octane the car uses, and I automatically assumed 87. I didn't see any issues with it, no knocking or anything, but the acceleration didn't feel as agressive. It still worked though without any issues.

My understanding is that your car's computer will automatically adjust the engine timings for combustion depending on what it detects.

I ended up just using 91 after I found out what is recommended just to be on the safe side.

It's a high compression engine designed to run on high octane, 91 being the lowest suggested. If you can get 92, 93, or 94, get the highest and your car will be happy and noticeably more peppy. Yes the ECU will dumb it down, just like you can live on donuts and coffee, for a while.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the engine is the most efficient at 91 and higher octane won't necessarily make it peppier. All the sources I've read said that higher octane in a lower optimized octane engines don't provide extra performance or efficiency. It could actually hurt that.

I noticed the change when going to 92. They include 91 in the high octane list to make Calipornians feel better after getting the lead out and no more 101 at the pump. I ran avgas when they dropped it until I cc'd the heads to run lower octane because my FE would ping at idle with 12.5:1 and factory timing. When I was on the east coast I ran 94 in my EVO8 because I liked the 4 wheel burnouts
