Post DIY: ILX coilover installation

Hey guys, i'm here to provide you guys with instructions that i never got when installing my coil-overs.
I was in a hard debate between the D2 coil-overs and the ksports but in the end i ended up going with D2's because the purple looks nice. Also ran out of daylight since i received them at 6pm and went to work on them asap.

installation took about 2 1/2 hours since no instructions were included, and i had to figure out on my own how they was suppose to be set up.

** DISCLAIMER : I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR MISTAKES I AM JUST HERE TO GUIDE YOU TO INSTALLATION. IF YOU ARE NOT MECHANICALLY INCLINED, I SUGGEST TO HAVE SOMEONE THAT IS DO IT !!! ***

Tools that you will need.

1/2 or 3/4 Breaker bar(1/2in prefered)
1/2 Ratchet
22MM socket
19MM socket
17MM socket
14MM Deep socket
12MM socket
17MM open end wrench
14MM open end wrench
needle nose pliers
flat head screwdriver
Allen or Hex Keys for top of the strut if your coilovers don't provide you with some.

I prefer deep sockets but whatever floats your boat.

How i got them.

Step 1 optional - You can do front or rear first but i decided to let the car sit evenly on jack stands.

Size: 67.0 KB

Step 2 - I wanted to knock out the rears since they are more time consuming and a little harder. Start removing the plastic clips from the trunk liner. Then push it aside so you can reach the strut. There are about 10-12 push clips, 4 involve a flat head screwdriver and the rest you can just pull out with your nails.

Size: 34.9 KB

Now evenly pull up through out this whole plastic thing (idk what its called) and it should pop right off
Name: IMG_2067.jpg
Views: 1797
Size: 43.8 KB

Step 3 - Push the interior lining towards the middle so you have room to maneuver around in there. Take your Allen/Hex key and a 14MM open end wrench to loosen the top bolt on the strut. **excuse the unfocused pic, it was kind of hard to fit my big ass camera in there.
Name: IMG_2100.jpg
Views: 1842
Size: 38.3 KB

Step 4 - Now go under and unbolt the strut with a 14MM socket.
Name: IMG_2093.jpg
Views: 1807
Size: 37.8 KB

Step 5 - Take the spring out. I didnt have a spring compressor on hand and the spring was already 80% hanging out, i know ill get flamed for this but it SAFELY POPPED OUT. It didnt over exaggeratedly shoot out and break my face.
Name: IMG_2135.jpg
Views: 1874
Size: 73.7 KB

And now it should look like this.

Size: 64.9 KB
Name: IMG_2107.jpg
Views: 1827
Size: 64.1 KB

Step 6 - My D2 coils required i cut off a few rubber pieces so the spring would sit in level

Size: 62.7 KB
Name: IMG_2123.jpg
Views: 2068
Size: 66.4 KB

Step 7 - install the coilover spring and strut. I didnt get a pic putting the spring on. Set the bottom of the spring in place than push down on the trailing arm to slip the top into place. Bolt the strut on with the 14MM bolt then use a floor jack to raise the trailing arm up till the top of the strut can be seen inside the trunk of the car. Now go inside the trunk and proceed to bolt on the strut using the 17mm and allen/hex key. voila should look like this !
Name: IMG_2139.jpg
Views: 2220
Size: 76.9 KB

Step 8 - Drink a glass of water and eat your friends chips. By now, you'd be a little sweaty and dehydrated. You should be finished with the rears

Step 9 - On to the front ones! Pop that hood and remove these plastic covers. Use your 14MM long socket to ** BREAK THEM LOOSE DO NOT TAKE THE NUTS COMPLETELY OFF **

Step 10 - Once your wheels are off, you shall be staring at this.
Name: IMG_2148.jpg
Views: 1813
Size: 59.1 KB

You will need....
white circle - 14MM
Red circle - 12MM
Orange circle - 19MM
Green circle - 22MM
Blue circles - Needle Nose Pliers

there are two sets of 19mm and 22mm so prepare to break a sweat.. again.

Size: 64.6 KB

Step 11 - You shall be looking like this. Slip the top into the shock tower first and hand tighten the 14mm bolts onto them. Now to avoid straining your back, get the floor jack and raise the hub up until you can slip the 19mm bolt into place.
Bolt everything up and double check everything is TIGHT :taz: ALSO REMEMBER !!!! there is an adapter on your coilover under the lock sleeves that bolts onto your sway bar, tighten it up with an allenkey/hex key to keep it in place.

Sorry, i would have pictures but my camera died shortly after this pic ^

Enjoy some iphone5 camera pics of the finished product.

I'm gunna skip the spacers all together and go aftermarket wheels as soon as the gsr gets sold.

**note that you will need an alignment after the coilovers are installed.**

And yeah for sure, as long as your not 2 hours away I can lend a hand haha

Well.. specifically for the back.. the stock cambers and toes arms are adjustable to some extent depending on how low you go..

Not trying to burn through tires.. lol

Trust, after fenders get rolled and new wheels come into play. Ill go as low as I can till I move out of this lame apartment with speedbumps everywhere. Or until next year when I get on bags

I used to run rpf1's 17x9 +45 offset with 245 series tires. They poked out about 1/2 to 3/4 of an in. I was monster truckin so I can't be exact with fitment

Side note, ill be adjusting camber and stuff tomorrow.

Startin to hear all those honda tech excuses when someone posts in the slammed thread then when everyone says they arent slammed they say "yeah but potholes my driveway and I cant roll".
Just do the damn thing. Youve got coils already. Slam it!! Low is a way of life. Not something to rock when its convenient. I thought you understood that. So much hate.

Im wondering now if they would fit as natural camber set in. Im going to be going around 8in wide with as low of an offset as I can get.
Do you know around what specs you want for wheels?

You have until I get coils or it'll be a fail.
I agree on So Cal roads. I loved mobbin through Reseda with my front lip scrapping the crown of the road on flat roads. hahaha Neck breakin for sure!!

If you want zero camber that may be hard. But you did say you want a fender roll so it can be made to fit.
If you are ok running camber than you can get 9 to fit with camber and slight roll or camber alone.

I'll be taking the neg camber route to make my set up fit. I wont be going too aggressive this first wheel set up but once I get my first set I'll immediately post them up testing waters to see how much I can get because I then know how much more aggressive I can go.. I'll however wait until I have coils then sell the wheels for something new.

I wont do any fender rolling until the car is refinanced but it is definitely in my future. As well as radiused fenders if I can.

Why don't you go with something a little bigger? 18 at least? I may even go 19 for the right set. My second set will be 19 and aggressive as fuck for that vip look.

Nice DIY. We're working on some XLR8 ISC coilovers for the ILX, which would be similar to this design.

This design? As in your average mass produced coilover design?

Will they be in the market of Megan D2 Racing RS or Megan EZ Streets?

Then we'll both have to go as low as possible and then photoshoot together haha
Haha from older people saying this thing looks dysfunctional.

I was considering 18's so I could fill up the wheel well a little more but then I don't know. I'm gunna throw on my friends BBS ch (18x8.5 +22) and then we'll see how I feel about size and offset. I don't want exactly zero since i kind of want to track it once or twice for fun so I might end up with neg .9 or 1.9. I'm gunna buy the first set new so Im just gunna get something with a perfect fit until turbo/sc kicks in. I've been looking into kraftwerks sc since they are able to boost up to 15lbs and one of my team members has one on his 400whp si.

Thank you, and adding to what usdmjon said; would they include dampening, pillowball mounts, etc? My d2's don't really ride as smooth as I thought but it's an out of box installation and I haven't adjusted them yet. Ill be looking to upgrade mid next year if I don't bag it.

I looked and saw D2 sells single piece rears for the ilx. Front single piece as you have WITH single piece rears are going for just under $1,400. Rears also come with pillowball mounts.

Slaaamed, maybe you could swap out the springs or struts, whichever you feel is giving the bouncy quality.
I'll end up fucking with whatever set up I get and make a purchase knowing Ill either swap out the struts or springs. I really need to put off dumping her until my lease is up but I really cant resist.

Wuuuuuuuuut!? As far as I knew d2 only made one variant for the ilx. I didn't know they had a one piece set with pillowballs for the rear as well. I probably will, the springs kind of suck. And I need to adjust the dampers to a stiffer setting.

I just went on d2s site and saw the option. Looks to be like 300-400 more for the 1pc rears. Kind of expensive if you ask me.

How is that even possible? The strut bolts directly into the chassis of the car. I don't see how the pillowball mount goes in there but oh well, Ill check them out later. Which coils do you plan on going with?

Honestly.. I am trying to wait as long as I can too.. but I can't stand looking at that horrendous wheel gap.... given the car I had previously had no gap

What I meant is a fully threaded shock body coilover. I've found the XLR8 ISC coilovers to be a better product than the D2, Megan, K Sport, FnF, etc. The product is more durable, has a better and longer warranty, and ISC has better customer service.

The kits include pillowball upper mounts for McPherson style struts. All the kits we sell have damping and ride height adjustment. And you can choose your spring rate as well.

Oh okay, pillowball mounts for the rear too? Or will it be a two piece like how it is now. I wanted 7k fronts and 5k rears but it doesn't feel nowhere near that.
Any internal modifications for the k24z7 yet?

Well looks like Im not gunna go any lower than this in the near future. This is the cause of huge potholes in Fullerton.... Luckily the aero kit will cover over it. But for now it's a huge eye sore.
