Mount flatscreen on wall, now what to do with the other components??

So I'm buying a townhouse and planning to mount a 46" Samsung LCD on a wall which should measure 5'4" wide, so 9 inches on each side to center it.

What does everyone do with the other components to their system? I'm talking about cable box, dvd player, xbox...etc.

1) component shelves (small width)

2) tv stands (big)

3) hide in closet use remote infrared eye placed by tv to capture remote buttons clicks

4) other

Pictures welcome. I'm under the impression that #2 would come out looking like "hey I just wanted to look cool...there was no purpose mounting it on the wall since I have this big stand here but I just wanted to show off".

What does the rest of your living room / media room furniture look like? Is it more modern, traditional, old-school? Lots of glass, leather?

I personally like something more like these. You can have everything under your TV and not have it look out of place. I personally don't feel the need to hide everything.

We have a buffet like the one above.

Getting the components out of the way is my number 1 preferred choice. Hiding them, off to side, behind, just somewhere else.

With my current layout, I cant get away with doing that. So, when I finally decide to re-mount mine I want to find an ultra low cabinet to go underneath. Something you never think of putting a TV on.

FYI the pictures I used in the OP were just examples I found on target.com, not something I was planning to buy.

I am getting 2 sofa's an ottoman because I have the room for it.

I don't know exactly what I am doing for tables & lamps since I don't have the place yet. I can post a visio diagram of the room later on when I get home.

I have mine out of the way of the TV. It's a much better, cleaner look.

They are however still in range of my remote, so no need for blaster or RF remote.

Here is my planned layout:

The couch across from the tv might be moved against that dividing wall. I have it spaced a foot away right now, but that is only if I can find an end table skinny enough. I'd like it as close to that wall as possible so that there is a tv viewing spot directly in front. Two ottomans are picutres, only buying one right now and those are just placeholders for where they might end up when not in use.

IF the stairs are going up:

Looks like if you wanna do some work, you can build a built-in cabinet under the stairs for your AV gear, and it will be flush mounted into the wall that your TV is on.

Your stairs.....are they going up to the 2nd floor or down to the basement?

They are going up. Everything won't fit in a 14.5 width area, and I don't really want to re-frame the wall.

There's got to be more then 3 people on this forum that own or have seen a flat screen tv mounted on a wall. More opinions needed on what to do

mount on wall, then put the long table underneath with everything in it. I like that look, my friend did that.

You got a coat closet near by? Build a rack in there. Use an IR blaster or go RF to control the system. Gear out of site FTW.

personally, i'd mount the TL on the wall where the ottoman is that is 8'4 and move the sofas a bit back, and put an end table with a lamp on it, and use some shades or black-out curtains to control the light. That way you have a better viewing area, and it would be better acoustically so the sound doesn't bounce so much up-stairs and in other rooms. As well, it would be better for a home-theater system. If wall mounting, I'd just have a simple cabinet like the ones Ravi posted, the TV stand is overkill.

How high did you mount the TV...I have a TV stand in mind that's 30'' high... I want to mount it high enough for it to look good but not too high as to interfere with viewing (from normal sofa height)...

What to do, what to do.

btw I have a samsung 52a650 and this TV stand http://www.roomstogo.com/index.cfm?f...m&ipac_id=8485

Haven't mounted it yet but I think I'm going with the bottom of the tv 42 in from the floor. Center is 56 from the floor. (tv is supposed to be 28in tall). I have 8 foot ceilings.

Take the time to hide them in the wall. Either hide them in wall cabinet in a closet or hid them behind the TV by the stares, taking the time to make easy adjustments to the wall stud to fit with a IR repeater mounted by the TV to get the signal to them.

I forget which one it was, but they had one where you pressed a button and the tv rose up out of the console

Looks like you might have enough room to move things around. Ideally you don't want to view your TV at an angle like that and were walking traffic passes in front of your viewing. It will get old quickly. Also from 15' away the viewing distance seems too far for that size TV.

Here is what I recommend... move things around the room. Get a mount that you can pull away from the wall so you can view the TV with a better angle. Example shown in the last picture.

This will also prevent the traffic coming from either rooms to walk in front of your viewing. Then put the components in a cabinet under the TV (orange block) like the image below.

You can get a bracket like this...
