Try being in the industry I am in with the race to the bottom at the forefront. The level of garbage released by manufacturers has never been higher. Cheap hardware, buggy software, updates that break as much if not more than it fixes, non-existent support, and all to make a few dollars. People think we like selling TVs, like we make a killing. Sony XBR is the only TV you can make any money on. Most other TVs, you are lucky to make $50 on. And for that money, with the multitude of issues that can and do pop up, and then having to support the set? No thanks, I'd rather not sell the TV, charge time and materials, and leave it up to the client to buy their TV and get support wherever they buy it.

Yo 2001, your thought on Sonos?
we are starting to redo our place and I've been debating about getting rid of my larger speakers (and wires) and going with a sonos playbar and sub and the wireless sonos ones for rears. It's a small condo. I can wall mount everything. I want good sound. I'm just over the days of needing/wishing for crazy theater quality. And I like the idea of smaller and less intrusive.

My home audio has always been a Sony soundbar with a sub that's convenient as hell with 3 HDMI plugs and plays DTS HD-MA and Dolby TrueHD. As for simulated rear audio, it's non-existent but Blu Rays still sound great. I'm buying a house with a bigger living room where the couch is kind of in the middle and the TV against the wall. The soundbar may not be as strong with the more open area since my living room has a high ceiling since it's a 2 story house. I'm thinking about investing in a true 5.1 but the ceiling is really high and behind me is the staircase. I guess rears on stands are in my future. Worth it?

From an integrator standpoint, Sonos is a bit of a pain. Only because they do not integrate with control and automation systems well due to Sonos trying to control the environment for their customers. For a standalone system, however, it is great. Very easy to use, very easy to setup, and the most reliable system out there. The playbar, even on its own, sound great. Add the sub and rears and it is a great system. If you go this route, I suggest bumping the volume on the rears a little in the app as they sometimes can be a bit soft in the default mode. For a very easy to setup system with great sound quality, I think it can't be beat. It blows the doors of the Sony system that was mentioned (at a much higher price though of course)
Part 2 of the question...thoughts on running the Sonos through a receiver? I know its probably not ideal...but if I get rid of my receiver, than I have to find another way to deal with all the HDMI inputs. I have an older TV, and I currently have 4 HDMI inputs to send through to said TV. Perhaps moving to a switcher or something like that? Still want everything to run off and work with my Harmony remote (I know you hate them) for ease of use and laziness.

I honestly didn't care about 3D but after playing one of my PS4 games on my OLED and how good it looked I went and ordered some Marvel movies in 3D (comes with 2D as well). 2 Blu rays for $18. Got Civil War, Winter Soldier, Guardians, and Ultron.

Sony Home button Fix
in some cases, after applying the april 2017 marshmallow update, some users lose access to their tv home screen - pressing the home button brings up a grey screen, so access to the home screen and android menus from there is lost. Luckily there is an easy fix that a member (paulgo) of the avs forums 850c thread discovered. I've walked through the process to summarize the detailed steps below.
Steps:
1. Press the "help" button on the remote
2, select the "troubleshooting" option (first box) on the help screen
3. Select "settings" from the list of options on the left side of the screen
4. Select "configuring the tv"
5. Select "[tv]"
6. Select "jump to the settings screen"
7. Scroll to the right and select "apps"
8. Scroll down to the "system apps" row
9. Find "system software update" in the app list (it's alphabetical)
10. Select the "system software update" app
11. Choose the option to "clear data" and confirm
that will do it. Once you clear data on the system software update app the tv realizes the update is complete and access to the home screen, android menus, etc., is restored.
Other than that intermittent install glitch this appears in my early use to be a solid update of the marshmallow release.

^ I had one years ago. They're fine but a PITA to set up and manage. You need to connect it to your computer every time. IMO, the way to go now is harmony hub and your phone. Does it all and interfaces with smart home as well.

I've had a couple of 650's over the years, its a good remote for the $ and what it does. I have since switched both TV's to using the hub instead, got another hub and one to give as a gift for $69 each right before Christmas. I think I've just about broken the habit of pointing the remote at the TV. gotta love RF.

Yeah loving the remote. Didn't realize there was a screen under the sticker. I was like how the fuck do I know what command buttons do The Activity button feature is a little buggy but other than that I only need 1 remote.

Yeah the 650 is such a solid remote.. A while back I considered upgrading to the then current Harmony One.. but the 650 still did everything I needed it to do so there was no benefit to upgrading.

I believe the One got rid of the Infrared and went RF (uninterested in that), It had the option for more devices and 'activities' as well.. Plus a sleeker looking UI.
All things I was not and am not interested in. The new Hub is cool because you can use your phone though...

My hub came with a basic remote (RF) that I use quite a lot. The fun part is you can use Echo/GH to command your stuff via voice. I can turn on my TV/Xbox/BR player from upstairs and it'll all be booted and ready to use by the time I get my ass down the stairs and sit on the couch.

RF on a macro based universal remote is practically a must. Especially with Harmony which takes an eternity to run through the macro sequence. RF, press it and forget it. It can take 2 minutes to run through the macro if it wants to and all the codes will reach their respective devices. IR is a terrible way to use a macro based Universal Remote. Even with devices right in front of you, RF is preferred to eliminate missed codes. Simply put, it is a LOT more reliable.

Samsung TV owners furious after software update leaves sets unusable
Customers say recently acquired televisions stopped working after the company sent out an upgrade a week ago
Thursday 24 August 2017 07.45 EDT
Thousands of owners of high-end Samsung TVs have complained after a software update left their recently acquired £1,400 sets with blank, unusable screens.
The Guardian has been contacted by a number of owners complaining that the TVs they bought – in some cases just two weeks ago – have been rendered useless by an upgrade sent out by Samsung a week ago.
Others have been posting furious messages on the company’s community boards complaining that their new TVs are no longer working.
The company has told customers it is working to fix the problem but so far, seven days on, nothing has been forthcoming. The problem appears to affect the latest models as owners of older Samsung TVs are not reporting the issue.
This is not the first time Samsung customers have experienced problems after buying TVs. Last year Guardian Money reported that buyers had been left frustrated after their new TVs would not access the BBC iPlayer.
The company, thought to be the world’s biggest TV manufacturer, had sold the TVs without having the correct licensing agreements in place.

I have a warranty request out for my Sony XBR. There's a weird spot in the top middle of the screen that seems to never dim. Almost as if the local dimming isn't...dimming in that area when the rest of the screen goes to black.

Sure no one really cares but update on this saga...after 3 months of arguing with Sony they finally replaced my 930D with a 930E and it is MUCH better. No more weird spots on the screen and odd backlight issues.
