What to do with Deck

Hey Guys, girl and I moved a bit ago and have a decent roof top deck that is 16x25 off the family room. Floor below we have a smaller balcony off the master so I threw a little bistro set out there but have no idea what to do with the deck. We bought a table that seats 6 on close out super cheap along with some chairs I don't love but they were only $20 each so I coudn't say no.

Right now I would like a big round outdoor bed or some cool lounge chairs but girl wants a hammock but it just seems trashy, thoughts? Any ideas what we could do for some greenery up there, looks so boring. I would like to do some big square planters and ideally a big square low box with grass but I don't know if it is practically or feasible, anyone have any experience with this?

Just got laid off so I don't want to spend a ton of money but I have a ton of time and tools to make stuff. Oh, we are renting in Richmond, VA and hopefully will move back to Florida soon.

haha my thoughts exactly but we don't own the place. Maintance guy is cool and is going to run a cable jack outside so we can put a TV on a flat part of the roof next to the slider (hard to explain but nice platform by the door about railing level) so it will be fun to watch games and such.

If you are laid off, and will be moving soon, the why waste $$ and time on this?

Moog - Good point but we will have the place till the end of the year and I am so so bored, I need a project. Thinking of building some big planters to put along the fence but just can't figure out exactly what yet

astro turf, build a bean bag toss game, try garage sales for large planters, you could try to build a hammock stand out of 4x4s and lag bolts.

Try to make this:

That's sick Stogie, wish I had that view! Base doesn't look hard to make and I could make boring looking 4x4 supports for the sides but it would loose the look and it looks like it would need more bracing at the bottom

After looking around a bit last night, I came across that same four post hammock made by Henry Halls with a price tag of $20,000. On the plus side, Pottery Barn had one that is similar (not as cool but I'm sure a little bit cheaper) but they don't appear to carry it any more.

Very, very cool idea. I wonder how the posts are secured at the bottom to prevent them from breaking off and falling towards the center of the hammock.

I think I'm going to go a tad less expensive with something like the one below. I don't love it but it does look comfortable. I was thinking of trying to build a slightly elevated square platform underneath it and either put in a high quality fake grass or sod it. I have read sod will grow pretty well over plastic with holes punched into it on a plywood base. As much as I would like some real grass, I don't know if I want to deal with it.

Alright, so the girl wanted some herbs and hammock so I planted some palms with her flowers around them, then an herb wall with leaks, purple basil, green basil, cilantro, rosemary, parsley, oregano, and random flowers. Then I did a hanging basket of strawberries and one of cherry tomatos, pot of tomatos, and a planter of kale and broccoli. Also hung some much needed lights but think I will buy some more and make a 'Z' shape. Wanted Jefford's hammock but a bit out of my budget so I went more traditional.

Deck still looks bland so i think I'm going to do a 6x12 slightly raised box with sod in it under the hammock to bring the outdoors in a bit more and got permission to have a grill assuming I only lightest close to the railing. Anyone ever made a grass box? Thinking of framing it out, getting some plywood as a base, drilling drain holes, lining with pond liner, then some rocks, sod on top?

What about cutting the grass? seems like a hassle for something not permanent.

Does seem like a hassle to cut I guess, just miss a tropical green kind of environment I guess. Mini Bar is looking good and I think I'll get some pots of bamboo around 8 ft tall to put behind the table and be done. Oh, I painted one more pot red on the other side to tie in with the red umbrella and damn the hammock is comfy.

Thanks guys!

Astro turf? Real grass would be a PIA for a small area and in a box.
