Water Softener, Whole Home Filter or both?

Question says it all. Our softener's valve quit, and I'm very tempted to at least get away from the proprietary Water Boss unit that we have.

We do have filtered drinking water through the fridge.

I currently have a water softener at home, and I'm satisfied with it. But I've never heard of a "whole home filter"?

Think an undersink filter system the size of a water softener

Sorry, I'm a little confused. Are you asking if you should get a water filter (like the ones that purify your drinking water) OR a water softener? I thought they were completely different things. Do you have hard water at home? Is there a problem with the water you use, or are you just interested in making better tasting/cleaner drinking water? Why would you want filtered water through your house (run in toilets, shower, appliances, etc)?

We have a water softener. See the Water Softener thread a few threads down from this one. Sorry for misunderstanding your question.

Its to replace the water softener that we have. Our softener is broken, and there are filtration systems that can also remove Mg and Ca from water, like a softener can.

My aunt has a whole home water filter system. It runs through her whole.....~7,000 sq ft home. It's insane.

It was weird though b/c you can turn on the water in any single faucet and drink from it instantly without thinking about it...

It came in handy when I was locked out of the house on the patio/pool area without water when it was ~100 degrees out for about 5 hours. I made lemonade with her fresh lemons + water from the hose.

Sorry, I'm no help at all.
