Utility Deposits are Outrageous!
My girlfriend has been looking for a place for a month now and they finally found the right place. They go to give the security deposit and then find out that the electricity deposit is $630!! WTF. It's a teeny duplex in Delaware, that seems a bit out of line. If it was a larger single family home then that would be understandable. When I rented my 2 bedroom townhouse in socal (with a roommate) the deposit for electricity was only $300...
I know they usually charge money depending on your credit and/or 2x the previous tenants highest bill, but she was on the phone and the lady said it didn't have anything to do with credit. Do they ever let you pay off the deposit in payments or will it have to be all at once?

that is a crazy high deposit...credit score much?
we had to pay $150 deposit and they spread it out over a 3month span on top of our monthly bills.

I never had to do any sort of deposit on electricity. Just a simple $300 deposit for an apartment

I don't know why it would be so high either, her credit isn't even bad either. I guess they're just charging everyone a lot now...
We should just tell them to shove it and build a giant windmill lol.

Did she get one back from the place she is leaving?
Also, ask to speak to a supervisor and be cool about it. A lot of this stuff can be "negotiated". Joke around with them a little. Worst thing that happens is you end up having to pay it anyway...

!! That's crazy! I bought my house almost 2 years ago and my deposit for the electric bill was $170. I got it credited to my account after the first year. They told me part of it was that I was a first time customer. PG&E (gas) charged me a $100 deposit, got that back after a year too.

Do they wait for you to rack up $630 worth of unpaid electric bills before they turn your power off?
