Steinway Pianos: worth it?

Anybody own or play regularly on one?

They are the standard in pianos and my wife plays like a phenom and certainly merits one. Apparently they hold their value extremely well. They are beautiful, but not in my humble opinion, worth the huge premium over a perfectly adequate high end Yamaha baby grand.

Anyways, she is campaigning hard for one but my only thought is the sweet car I could buy instead. Doh!

If you're looking at it as an investment in your wife, it's well worth it. Grand pianos in general hold their value very well. The Kawai baby grand that my family owns is over a decade old and is still worth around 85% or its original value on the open market. Grand pianos don't change much so there's no real depreciation to speak of.

Nonetheless, is it worth it over the Yamaha? Probably not in terms of sound quality. In fact, the Yamaha will likely produce a better, more consistent sound, overall. But the Steinways are hand built and have a hand-made quality and warmth to them that the objective characteristics cannot capture.

Yamaha.
When she plays well enough to have someone cut her a check for playing it, then you spring for the Steinway.

Just get her the piano she wants. Otherwise when it comes time for your next new car you will not be able to convince her that you need anything better than a 5 year old Accord.

Well, we're the proud owners of a brand spanking new '07 baby grand (5'7") Steinway. Never thought I'd spend that much for a piano, but we got full value on our studio upright on trade-in, so that eased the sting.

The dealer agreed to swap out the brass pedals and hardware for nickel plated ones which will match our new home hardware. Will be delivered in about six weeks, just in time to make a nice housewarming gift.

Wife's happy. Stud for a day, pud for a lifetime.

Oh, and forgot to mention, we went with the classic ebony.

Wifey was leaning toward the dark maple like our previous upright, but the dealer said black is preferred 10-1 for resale (not that we plan to sell it anytime soon). Also, if we decide to upgrade in the future again, we get full value guarantee too.

Nice, that piano will pay out dividends to you for quite awhile.

Post a pic when you have it.

Very nice, I can see why they cost what they do.

congrats, that is a crazy nice piano. In a different life I played at a recital at the steinway hall in NYC where they make them. Unbelievable sound and quality.

Depending on the model, they're right around that area. An all out concert grand, however, is 100k+

Steinway Grand With 12,000 Parts Born Amid Grunts, Tattoos

Steinway pianos, very much at home among black ties and tails, happen to hail from a decidedly blue-collar New York neighborhood.

“Note by Note,” which airs tonight on PBS at 10 p.m. New York time, follows the creation of a Steinway concert grand L1037 from its humble origins in a Queens factory to the Steinway & Sons Manhattan showroom at 109 West 57th St., supplier to the world’s great concert halls.

The fascinating film starts on a snowy December day as craftsmen begin assembling the piano’s wooden frame.....
