Staining oak stairs to match hardwood floors
Is this something that can be done fairly easily? If not, how much should I expect to pay for it?
My builder is charging an arm and a leg to do it (no surprise there) but they did offer to leave the stairs unfinished and let me do it on my own. Just wondering if it is worth the hassle, or if its easier to just get the builder to do it.

it depends on the amount of decoration on your floors. for instance, intricate toekicks, railing legs/feet... etc.
are your floors oak?
i have a wood floor guy at my house right now doing the upstairs, i have to ask him how much to do my stairs (wasnt included in original estimate) so i'll let you know what he says.

If you are going to have kids, you probably want carpeted stairs

The floors will be maple. A bit of a mismatch with the oak stairs, but I was told that it will still look good once the stairs are stained.
Whiskers, the house came with a carpet runner on the stairs, and I actually asked them to remove it. I just prefer them bare.

Werd on the carpet, I removed that shit.
Fiddle... why not do a dark stain on the stairs. Instead of trying to match the maple (which you wont since oak has such a different grain and stains/ages differently) you can go dark and contrast iwth the light

I agree. You will not be happy with the non-match.
