Refinish cast iron bathtub?
I'm going to be updating a bathroom in my house and I'm considering having the cast iron tub refinished.
Why do I want to do this? It's blue and I would have it refinished white. Other than the color, there is nothing wrong with it. Most new tubs are acrylic. Is going from cast iron to acrylic a step down?
Anyone refinish a cast iron tub? How did it work out?

Refinished a cast tub 20+ years ago from white to gray and it still looks good. We use the shower 100%, but the tub still looks good. It was a spray on process and then backed overnight with heat lamps. Just refinished a cast tub in a rental unit with a (3) step epoxy process that I hear holds up well.

if the tub doesn't have any damage to it, and it is just a color change, i would keep it and have it refinished... when i did the bathroom reno in the old house, i only took out the old tub because i wanted to put in a smaller one to save on the footprint of the bathroom... it was perfectly fine and when i put it at the curb, someone picked it up within 20 mins...
the only benefit with the newer acrylic ones is the weight and thermal properties... when i pulled the old tub out, i needed 4 guys to carry it down 7 stairs... i was able to move the new one up the stairs and into position myself... if you actually use the tub to soak, it will also retain the hot water longer...
claw foot cast iron tubs are coming back into style.. if you decide not to use yours and it is claw foot, you may be able to sell it to recoup some money...

It's not a clawfoot. It's just a run of the mill 30x60 boring bathtub. If I were to replace it, it would also be with something boring. I think I want to try to refinish it but the wife thinks I'm We are going to replace the floor, vanity, mirrors, and lighting. She also wants the bathing area re-tiled so she thinks I'm nuts to not replace the tub.

Here it is, in all it's glory. Previous owner painted the floor white, which is now starting to peel.

Bathtub at the gf's house is the same blue.. i hate it.. I've considered refinishing it too. Hopefully you do it so I can see how it's done vicariously
The toilet is also blue but I'll just get rid of that and get a new one

So while I was on the fence about re-doing this when you posted, I just realized that our guest bathroom has a refinished tub. Our house is older but they re-did it all at the end of last year and the tub looked flawless so I assumed it was new. I did notice the drain surround looked older but didn't think anything of it until I showered in there and sure enough, refinished cast iron and it looks fantastic.
Do it, just get blue flowers.

Mine's going in the garbage.
I couldn't talk my wife into it and not worth the battle.

Here is how my bathroom project is going. I have a contractor doing the work. They have been working on this for two weeks. No way I could have found the time to tackle it myself.
