Recommend a good coffee brewer
Hey guys. I'm want to get my uncle a coffee brewer for Christmas. I know there's plenty of coffee drinkers out there. So do you guys have any recommendation on a good coffee brewer? Something not too difficult or plague with buttons and features since my uncle isn't tech savvy. He already has a coffee maker with like one button but it looks like it can collapse any minute. My budget would be from 50-100 dollars. The reason for such a high price is because I picked him as my secret santa and our minimum is 50 and max is 100.
Maybe I'm over thinking this whole coffee brewer thing because isn't it just a simple device that heats up the water, go pass the coffee and filter, and into the cup? What seperates a good coffee brewer from a normal one? Sorry I don't drink coffee so I'm clueless as to what an 80 dollar coffee brewer has over a 20 dollar one on amazon.
Oh BTW, I don't think I need a grinder built in since he buys grind coffee any ways.
Thank you for your help.

Get him a french press - around $40. Add one scoop coarse ground coffee per 6 oz cup of coffee, add hot water, stir, let brew for at least 4 minutes, use press/filter to seperate coffee grinds from coffee. Tastes much better than brewed through a Mr. Coffee plus no maintenance involved. I first experienced this at the Ahwahnee Lodge in Yosemite - haven't looked back since.

I like the Chemex: http://www.amazon.com/Chemex-8-Cup-C...9844823&sr=8-3
You'll look like a mad scientist when you use it, but it tastes great.

Picked this one up from Target on Black Friday. Seems to make an excellent cup of coffee and is pretty easy to use. And I'm a sucker for an analog clock. The adjustable burner temp is a really nice feature too. I don't like it when the coffee comes out of the pot hot enough to melt the wax out of a paper cup.

This one's nice if you want something a little fancier. Brews the coffee into a tank and you dispense it from the lever in the front. And its got a gauge so you can see how much is left.

I'm really digging the Keurig coffee brewers. The pods are more expensive than traditional coffee, but I like the taste. The maker is a one touch operation, throw away the used pod when done and that's it.

I use a brewer every day and the only ones I will look at is the ones with a metal carafe. Not the glass ones. It makes a difference to me.

Never heard of that until just now!
Looks awesome, although I am not sure I could do it everyday for my morning coffee.

a little over budget for the OP, bvut for other coffee lovers- best coffee we drink anywhere is at home in the KBT-741.

karaffe straight up sucks, but the coffe this thing makes is awesome and fast. the flavour comes down to a high brew temperature, and this one at the time I bought it had the highest brew temp available. no gimmicks, no clocks, just an on button.
I think I paid just under $300 CAD, and it was worth it.

Man these things are awesome. Just so easy, press a button and out comes a cup of coffee in 1 minute. Great for that random cup of coffee but as mentioned not that great for a large number of people due to the cost.
If he just drinks a cup or two a day though this is the way to go.

Thanks for the suggestion guys. And yea I don't think my uncle would like to roll out of bed at 5 and setup a siphon coffee device. The keurig is close enough to my budget. I can always go over 100 dollars so that's not a problem.
Oh, what do you guys mean by the "pods" in the keurig?

For general brewing, I've been happy with enything by delonghi
Also, have him start buying whole bean coffee and then getting a burr grinder.

I just found out that Keurig uses K-Cup. Do you guys recommend any K-Cup flavors? I saw a bunch of folgers ground coffee in the cupboard so I think I might by him a reuseable K-Cup filter.

My mom just bought a moka pot and that things makes amazing coffee. The only problem is that it gets cold fast but the flavor and initial temp are amazing. She was a bit hesitant to buy it because everyone said it was a PITA to clean but it is no more difficult then any other pot.

It lasted about 6 years so I guess that's not bad considering it's daily use.
I'm in the market for a new one.
Suggestions?
....and before you mention single cup brewers.....I have one of those two, which I use when I'm in a jam, and I can deal with a weaker cup of coffee.
I was thinking about a Technivorm Moccamaster.
Pricey, but the reviews say it makes amazing coffee.
Thoughts?

I was going to suggest a single cup LOL.. have you heard of the new(er) Keurig Vues? I've been on the fence about getting one, mainly because my old keurig is 5 yrs old but still working like a champ (and i make probably 5 to 10 cups a day... I've read great reviews on them and their new settings, most importantly the brew strength choices. These new models let you pick just how hot, how big, and how strong you want it. Also makes cappuccino and teas. I'm not a fan of buying the Kcups but you can buy an adapter that lets you use your own coffee grounds.

^^ Thanks, but when given a choice, and time not being an issue, I like to brew my own beans. K-cups are overpriced, average at best coffee. That's why I use my Keurig on an as needed basis.

Agreed. Like i said i hate their cups, I use my own , its like a $20 adapter piece that they sell. I prefer it because the thought of standing coffee skeeves me out for some reason. To each his own lol. Ah well, best of luck finding one!

An insulated carafe is the best option.

I have been using the following Cuisinart for several years and love it. Fresh grinds every day, no need to refill the hopper more than weekly (2 cups per day, 7 days a week), and it makes good coffee if you buy good beans.

Good, another Cuisinart user.
Ours has made 8 cups of coffee a day, everyday, for damn near 4 years now. Still looks new, brews great, never had an issue.

The sizzle in the Steak
It was my Cuisinart that died.
It made a decent cup, but the hot plate warmer would kill the coffee quickly.
It had a nice shower head for the water, but the brewing time was longer than the 5-8 minute maximum.....and I'd guess that it never hit the +200F water temp.
I enjoy and I'd just like a better cup at home if possible. I buy good quality beans and grind them myself. I'm looking for a machine that can produce a great cup.
No snake oil B.S. machine. I don't care what it looks like. I just want it to perform.
....and yes, French Press & siphon clownz....sure those methods can make an awesome cup....and I do own a french press, but I'm look for the ability to make coffee in large volumes, as conveniently as possible....and perhaps even with (dare I say) and automatic timer.

Our Cuisinart Automatic Grind and Brew DGB-600BC has been making great coffee every day now for about 5 years.
It has a double-walled thermal carafe, which keeps the coffee steaming hot for several hours. The baseplate is not heated.
The key ingredients to good coffee are high quality water and high quality beans. Given that, this Cuisinart makes exceptional coffee and has been trouble free.
However, the grinder is loud enough to get everyone's attention and sounds like a jet engine spooling up for takeoff. Also, the carafe spout has a design flaw in which it dribbles if one tries to pour a bit too fast. We have simply gotten used to that and pour at a measured pace, but we do have to warn guests about it. (If they are not the type to listen, I just serve them.)
This model has been discontinued, but there are several choices of newer Grind and Brews on the Cuisinart web-site (and just about every unit has a timer now).
If I was buying a new coffee maker, I would do research of course, but Cuisinart would begin at the top.

The sizzle in the Steak
So I've had my "broken" coffee maker un-plugged for a while now. Last night on a whim, I plugged it back in, and presto-chango, it started working again.
I set the timer for coffee this morning, however the timer is not functioning, as I found out no hot was waiting for me....but when started manually this morning after the timer failed, it did make
...but I think it's on its last leg.
I was now thinking of this unit instead of the MoccaMaster
Bonavita BV1800
Half the price of the MM, but still SCAA certified. Pretty much the same concept as the MM. However it appears that some people have had the glass lining of the SS carafe shatter
