Protecting/Staining a new deck

Just built a new cedar deck and I have heard many different opinions on when to protect/stain a new deck, almost as many opinions as there are deck boards.

What's your opinion on when I should protect the cedar decking and railings and what product should I use?

I wouldn't stain it, but water protection, sure.

I was told to use Penofin. Looks great on the portion of fence I tried it on.

New stuff? I used it a few years ago on my deck in NY and that held up pretty well.

I've had great results with Cabot stain here in Michigan.
