They finally finished the re-assessment of my county and I got word today on our taxes. I knew it would be ugly, but had no idea it'd be this bad.

So I'm curious... Home owners for their primary residence. How bad you got it?

Amateur, come to NJ and you will learn what property taxes are all about. If you are building new construction here and not going into an adult community you can expect at least 10k, most likely more.

The subdivision I just put down an offer in is ~$3000/year

Depending on where around here, I've seen it from 2000 to 4500.

We haven't been assessed on the house yet, just the land. But from what my neighbors tell me, we're going to be in the $8500 + range for a 3br/2.5ba townhouse.

OH and we are going to get a bill for last years property taxes on the house. That'll be a nice $7000 bill.

SO, come October I'm getting a $9000 + tax bill.

Well the NJ income tax varies like the fed tax rate.
Most people here probably fall into the 3.9%-7% range.

Sales tax is 6%.

I think the sales tax is 6% in 19 counties and the remaining two counties have 3% on some items and 6% on others due to being the poorest in the state.

Not sure about income taxes though.

Mine’s about 4,100 a year for everything.
And that’s a 3,000 Sq Ft, 3-Bedroom, 2 bath place sitting on 2 acres.

Brand new townhouse in Northern Westchester County, NY: 2600 sq ft... 15' of property behind me = ~ $3200/year with the STAR deduction (which was very good for the area)

Brand new home outside of Charlotte, NC: 4500 sq ft, 1/2 acre of property = ~$3500/year

fwiw, my sister's home in Oak Park is about 100 years old.... fully renovated/remodeled tho. property tax is just over $20k... eek

$2300/yr, ~1200sq ft, 3 bed, 1 bath, 2 car garage, 17,000 sq ft lot...

They just did a reval in town, so my bill went a couple of hundred over last year. House is assessed a little under 100K more then last year... BTW, assessed != appraised.

Assessment on the house went up, but the tax rate went down. Proposition 2 1/2 in MA.

One of my criteria for buying a house was the tax rate. Some people overlook this when shopping around for houses, but I knew that the town I'm in was lower then some of the other towns in the area.

Tax rate of @2200 just went up to @2600 on a three-bed two-bath 1880's Victorian rowhouse in a "gentrified" neighborhoo near Center City, Philadelphia (within the city limits) - total of about 1600 square feet, and the concept of parking attached to a row house in CC is laughable...... However, we won't pay the tax increase, as it will be implemented just after we close on the sale of the place; market is softening, and we didn't get what we wanted but we are closing at $405 - four times what we paid for it about ten years ago.

The low taxes for real estate are fully compensated for by the Philadelphia City Wage Tax.......

That is a Extremly over looked thing here. there are many towns here where you could live in the ajoining town and pay half of what the others are paying. Check the local towns/cities to see whatr there mill rate is and when the last reval. Most times out of ten the mill rate will drop accordinly on the reval.

ya'll are getting cleaned out on property taxes....here, even though it is hurricaneville/lower alabama, i may have to cough up $1500-$1800 next year. this year we're just paying on the land so i'm not sure how much that'll be.

and my house is a 1800sq 4bed 2 bath

Prop 13 owns.

Right now paying around $2700 /year and can only go up 2% per year.

However, if/when I move into a new house, my guess is property tax will be arround 8-10k /year

I write off the square footage of my den (office), and then turn that into a percentage of the size of the house and use that to write off my heat, electric, and so on. Also get to write off most of my cable modem bill... and anything I buy for it (new desk, new monitor, and so on).

I make out better from that then actual profits... LOL...
