Oh those are good ideas. I thought it looked kind of shallow, but i figured it was an optical illusion.

Actually in person it's the opposite. Because of the slope of the land (which is less now b/c of grading) and the height of the raised wall... it appears as if the 4 foot end is like 8 feet deep!!

But yeah, doing 3 1/2 feet on one end (step side), 5' in the middle, and 4' on the other end make it more useful. I mean, think about it... when there's a deep end, you dive in... and swim away. Rarely do you actually stay in the deep end for an extended period of time. So we wanted to be able to use all of the pool all of the time... so we went with a "sport" pool

Hey, I have new pictures in case anyone is intersted. I just linked them here b/c I haven't updated our website yet . It's hard to see in the pics b/c they're still working on it... but there's a really nice contrast between the tiles and coping. They compliment each other as well. Looks sweet in person.

The coping is Noche Travertine (which will be a little darker then in the pics once it's cleaned off). The tile is just ceramic tile. Forget the name... something like Copper Canyon. Enjoy

Just a shot of them working on the tiling:

Another shot of the pool as a whole... almost done:

Closeup of the far edge of the pool:

Closeup of the raised wall. Between the tile and coping will be stacked flagstone. If you look closely towards the left of the pic you can see one of the two sheer decents (still has the blue protection on it):

Wow looks really good so far. You should make a slide from your second story window right into the pool

Curious how much do you think that will raise your electrical and water bills per month?

Water shouldn't go up too much b/c once it's full, it's full. May have to top it off once in a while, but no biggie. It will cost about $250 to fill it. From there... shouldn't be a big deal.

Electric shouldn't be so bad either. Need to run it a minimum of 4 hours per day, which isn't so bad. Electric down here isn't too expensive, so it may add maybe $20/mo or so.

Gas is what is very expensive.. and that's why we haven't installed a heater yet. We may decide to just do it for resale value... but probably won't use it much....

Should be poured Monday. It's pretty cool seeing them form it out, build up the steps... etc.

This weekend we have the last of the fence companies coming out to give estimates.... so that is the next thing we need to budget for (probably be installed late Feb before we fill the pool).....

Is it the law there that you have to have a fence? (probably is in most if not all places right?)

Lookin good So tell me, is watching this develop like watching a child grow?

Some weird laws down here. We live outside of Mecklenburg which is where Charlotte is... so they're a little more laid back out here

Our county (Union) does NOT require a fence, however, our town and our home owners association does. Hypothetically if there was no law that required a fence... we'd still be doing one. Most of our neighbors had little kids, and we will have kids down the road also... so a fence was never in doubt. It will go up once the pool is filled. If you look around the back edge of the pool you can see the holes that were dug for the footers of the columns that will surround the pool and be between fence sections.

As for watching it come along.. yeah, it's pretty cool. I work from home, so that adds to it since I can see everything done right from my office window!!

Yeah, it's nice, but hard as concrete in the summer!!

We've planted quite a few things (about 8 trees, and countless plants and flowers), and we always use top soil and peat moss when digging b/c the clay, while it may be nutricious, does not hold water at all.... so using the previously mentioned items help the plants/trees/flowers to take quickly and grow very well.

We have a lot of planting ahead of us once the pool is done. Several areas have been set aside as planting areas... plus we have to landscape the back of the hill that was created from the pool to prevent erosion. Should be a busy spring/summer

haha, not worried about anyone coming in. Our lot is very private... and there are several other pools in the community that are much more easily accessed

As for the hot tub... doing that would cost another $12k-$16k... which we felt was a waste of money... plus, they're very expensive to heat (natural gas). The pool will be heated eventually, so we'll have a 12 month swimming season if we choose (but again, natural gas, so we may not use the heater much. Who needs to swim December-Feb anyway? There's enough going on with the holidays to worry about maintaining a pool on top of everything). Even without heating it we're looking at about a 7-9 month swim season depending on temps... so heater is not a necessity, but nice for resale.

Additionally, we're doing a wetbar/additional patio setup under our deck since it's the deck is 9' off of the ground (meaning plenty of headroom). We'll probably just get a jacuzzi for under there for between $3k and $6k depending on how extravigent we want to go. So it will do the same thing and save us between $10k-$12k which is money that can be put to much better use elsewhere

Lastly... you don't really get much of a return on the built in hot tubs... so besides for it being more expensive then it's worth (in our opinion), from an investment standpoint it doesn't make much sense either....

Plain concrete for now. Either next year or the following year (probably the latter) we're going to have it stained and etched.

Keep in mind that the concrete you see in the pool is not the swim surface. They'll come in, pump out the water and clean it out... then spray a light gray plaster (color we chose). Then, when you fill the pool it will be a nice aqua color... kind of like the Carribean

Last picture for now. We're pretty much done until about Feb when the plaster will be sprayed, pool will be filled, and fencing, columns, and pergola go up. The only thing that will be done within the next week is the top of the steps (which will be travertine, like the coping) and the flagstone along the raised wall and face of the steps...

I couldn't get all of the patio in the picture. Looking at the top right of the pic there is about a 20'x12' section to the right of the bend (where the steps into the pool are) behind the deck which I couldn't get from the window. Also, below the window there is a 16'x12' section where the pergola will be. All told there is about 1000 square feet of patio.

Thanks

It's funny b/c my wife's family is bawling at her b/c I haven't uploaded new pics to the website in a few weeks... meanwhile, all the new pics have been posted here That's only b/c my laptop screen took a dump and I'm waiting for a new screen to arrive. Once that happens I can upload everything to the site.

Man! It's coming along pretty good. You need to get one spring board on the deck itself.

haha. We actually moved the location of the pool slightly away from the wood deck b/c my wife was afraid I would try to jump off the deck into the pool. Now it's far enough away where I don't think I'd risk it.

Yeah, we're looking forward to it!!

The guys just came yesterday to do the rock on the raised wall. All that's left is the travertine and rock on the steps... then the plaster (which we're waiting unil late Feb for).

Hey all. Got some new pics figured I'd share... Pergola was started (and almost finished) this past weekend. They cut everything at the shop, so when he got here it was just a matter of putting it up. Only thing we're waiting on are the 3 white columns. Oh and FYI, the whole pergola will be white eventually, but we have to wait a while for the wood since it's treated... the stain/paint won't take, so we'll probably do that after the summer....

And here's a closeup of one of the sets of steps showing the risers with the stone work. You can also see the rocks they did in the front of the planting bed. The travertine on the top of the steps should be going in this week....
