point me in the right direction

I need a new washer, dryer, dishwasher, range and fridge. Where is the best place to read reviews, prices, etc? I did a basic search on yahoo, and got tons of places, and I don't know which one is the best or even reputable. Or, if anyone has any suggestions on which products worked for them, that would be great also. Everything needs to be energy efficent, and relatively priced and attractive. The washer/dryer needs to be able to handle large, dirty loads. Thanks in advance!

Look for a local appliance dealer that has been around for a long time. You can usually get better bang for a the buck than at a big box. You can find them in the phone book. BTW, IMO any major brand that you have heard of makes a good machine. They all do what they are supposed to do. Some just look nicer, run quieter, or have special features.

Consumer Reports does this kind of thing well.

Our washer/dryer is Maytag, running like a champ for 25 years with only one service call for a broken belt.

Sears Kenmore line has a good reputation, too.

Agree, Consumer Reports has the best information on appliances. You might want to join their website to look at everything.

GE Profile and Whirlpool products have been good to me and very energy efficient - no problems, good stuff.

PC Richard & Son LOVES to deal. Especially when buying all at once, name your price. I do all my shopping first, find my lowest price then I go play hardball with them - always get the best deal from them.

We needed to buy a washer, dryer, and fridge when we moved in here... and we used Consumer Reports for all 3. We also used them when we decided what models to upgrade to as far as the dishwasher and range through the builder.

We then got all 3 at Best Buy and got 3 years interest free financing. All 3 pieces of equipment were LG and so far 21 months later, all have been running like a champ...

Usually The Great Inddors, Sears, Home Depot, and Lowes will usually have some good sales and rebates (free delivery, 10-20% off, $100-400 rebates on packages, etc...) on the appliances. I agree with everyone, use Consumer Reports and do your homework. I believe all brands are pretty good. You get what you pay for. If you can wait, the best time to jump on the best deals are usually around a major holiday like Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, etc.....

check with your local utility (electric & gas) for rebates and with the feds for tax credits. It may be that paying a little bit more for an appliance will net you a nice rebate/credit.

Thanks guys, everything was a big help. Really my only concern is the washer and dryer being able to handle large, dirty loads. I figure spend a little more money on those, because they will get the most abuse. Whenever I get a serious amount of money, the range and oven will be upgraded to keep in style with a +250 year old house. I love the Aga ovens and ranges, but at around 15k, its a little out of the budget. Now the only problem is figuring out how in the hell to get the washer and dryer upstairs, and remove the old ones. It was done at one point, obviously, I just dont know how

Another check for Consumers Reports

We built 2 years ago and bought Whirlpool Pro or whatever their top level is for everything. No problems on anything except the fridge....apparently ours was the first one off the assembly line after a holiday weekend. Two things have gone on it that have left it AWOL for over 2 weeks. Thankfully we have 2 more refrig's and just so happened to buy the extended warranty on it (but not on any of the other appliances...how is that for dumb luck??!!

Do you guys think that extended warranties are worth it?

Nope. If you buy a quality product, should not be a problem. If a problem does arise, parts are easily accessible online if you need to make a repair. Depends how handy you are I guess. Parts are usually cheap, labor kills you if you do not do it yourself. If you feel comfortable making repairs yourself, then forgo the warranty in my opinion.

^^^^ we don't usually get EW's but we did get the one for the refrig merely b/c Sear's plan includes annual cleanings. It was btwn 100 and 200 for 4 or 5 years so it made sense for us. We have paid for it several times over, especially since we got 500 back in food spoilage. It was a lucky buy for us b/c Whirlpool has good ratings/reliability but our fridge has been a dud...
