Painting an Apartment

I just got an ....

I'm currently in an apartment right now, but am not the lease holder. Might ask my roommate to just take a look at it to see what this particular complex has in the lease contract.

I'm moving in about a month to a new complex, and was wondering.....

Generally speaking, could they fine you if you painted one of the walls (continue reading)? I know there is probably always gonna be some variance in contracts, but I thought about painting just one wall, and then paint it back to white near the end of my lease so it would be back to it's original state.

Is that a no-no?
Could they take away the deposit even if it was back to original state?

I know I know.
"Why would you want to do that if you're just gonna have to change it back?"

Just cause.
I don't like the prison feel of all the walls being white, and want to paint one of them brown.
I don't mind doing the work to paint one wall.

What do yall think?

put a picture on it, problem solved.

OR

you can just duct-tape/hang up a giant king sized blanket on the wall, a few college kids I know did this, also the same goes for posters...

You're moving in about a month, why risk losing your deposit?

+1 on a picture or posters.

Nah.
Not where I'm at now.
I mean in the place I move to.

I definitely have plenty of pictures. Something about all the walls being stark white though is . And I probably wouldn't swing the sheet/blanket idea. I guess it could work, but have some pretty extreme OCD tendencies, and I think it would drive me insane. lol

Owners and managers can be pretty OCD also. Do you have any idea how many shades of plain white there are? Also, not sure what your skill and experience level are regarding painting.

If it was my place I would not approve of it. If I were you, I wouldn't chance it if my deposit were important. You get to be creative when you have your own place and stuff.

I am a property manager in Hartford, and I can tell you that my company DOES allow painting in our units as long as the tenants paint it back to white. Like one of the above people said, all landlords are different though.

If you DO paint, I would suggest a light color. Something that won't require 3 coats of primer just to get it back to white.

Exactly.. If it can be put back to a 'before you moved in' status, then you should have nothing to worry about. Generally most places repaint and recarpet when someone moves out anyways so you're kind doing them a favor
