Painted French Provincial Furniture

I will most likely have several threads in the next couple of years regarding my new house and the things in it. Basically, my wife and I bought the house from her parents, and have been slowly getting things to look "like us." The update list has no end as of right now, but we got such a great deal on the house, I really can't complain. We've been here since July and have just now cleared the downstairs and most of the 2nd floor.

Loose BIG plans for the house:
1) Stained Concrete Floors
2) Lots of wall paint
3) Backyard Landscaping
4) Wallpaper Striping

Her parents completely dropped the ball on the house and horded a bit, but since we've cleaned out all the shit and are starting to update, as well as personalize the house. Any shit you see in pictures is not ours, esp the garage. I've literally just pushed stuff out of the way to get our cars in. Tons of brass, stained white carpet, DISGUSTING wallpaper, ugly tile, etc. Its the picture perfect late 90's house.

Anyway...we found an entire bedroom suit of ugly, dated white and gold French Provincial furniture stashed away in a bedroom upstairs. It was not well kept and had been neglected. Last week and today, I took it upon myself to update the look and get it in our bedroom. I searched high and low to see what colors would look good, etc.

We chose a satin black for the dressers and a little something special for the nightstand that will go in my office.

I should have taken before pics of the dressers, but I didn't. They we're awful. Basically sanded them, and sprayed them. The finish looks VERY professional. They we're all the same creme/gold as the first shot of the nightstand. I did rub some candle wax on the nightstand so paint wouldn't stick in some places and it would look slightly distressed. This is my first time doing anything like this, so be kind.

5 hours of work. Not for everyone, but I'm a European at heart.

...and the dressers.

I apologize for the iphone pictures, I'll snap better pics of the house, etc this week and maybe start an update thread as it seems like im doing stuff every other day.

The paint and the tape did all the work.

1) Frog tape is amazing stuff.
2) Krylon Fusion is MUCH better than Rustoleum's similar paint. The nozzle is flat, rather than round and the consistency is slightly different, you dont get any drips.

I've never owned new furniture so painting it has always been my strategy.

Nice work.

Nice work.
We wanted an entire new bedroom suit but, this worked out great. I'll take some before and afters of our bedroom down the road, im sure the transformation will be significant.

I've heard mixed things on Frog tape, but the lines on that table are perfect. I'm guessing you'd recommend it.

Good to know on the paint.

I really took my time with the tape, because I have never used it. I used a plastic squeegee to break the seams where the wood was curved and then applied another piece in the broken tape. I scored the tape line, just to be sure.

My advice would be to practice with it first. Its kinda tricky, and there's a bit of a learning curve.

I think this the first thing I've ever owned that has no end, not because it needs to be replaced, I just like making it look better and making it our own. One day, a few years from now I can look back and say..."damn, im glad im done, but this looks awesome!" I want to do as much of the work myself as possible.

instead with the house, ever renovation will be your last... it also depends on how ocd you are too... u know me and DIYs, so i am a big believer in saving on the labor costs there... and it will be a good sense of satisfaction when u step back and say 'i did that.'

maybe it is my ... but i am getting to the point where i'd be happy when all i have to do is just mow the lawn every weekend... it is always some bs that seems to pop up...
