Ok I have the Honeywell unit but haven't installed it at the new house so I will figure out that unit it on my own but those that have the Nest and the Ecobee can anyone tell me if they can be password protected? My gf is unreasonable with the temps she sets the A/C and I don't care what other issues it causes but I am going to lock her out of the A/C. Thing is costing me a fortune as it was set to 67 yesterday which is insane to me.

Reminds me of my roommate in college.

It's like 45° outside. Turns on the AC because he's hot.

Our electric bill for a TINY 2 bedroom apartment used to be like $300-400/month

Home automation might have just gotten a little more interesting withi Google Home. Here is to hoping it will work with more thermostats than just the Nest.

I was walking through depot yesterday and noticed this Honeywell. It took me by surprise.

We don't really seem to have a home automation thread so I guess I will post this here. Ordered Wifi switch and a outdoor wifi outlet this weekend by WiOn. I want to be able to turn my firepit lights and the light on the outside of my shed in the backyard from inside the house. Hoping this will work for that. I tested the wifi signal out in that area this weekend and it seemed pretty good.

Start one up! I'm hoping to start participating in that thread as soon as I get my bar remodel underway.

Ok I will start one with some information from my experience tonight once they arrive.

I know you were joking but there is a physical switch for the light on the outside of my shed. Problem is it is inside the shed which stays locked when I am not getting something out of it. The lights for my firepit come off an electrical outlet on the outside of my shed and the switch is on the outside . I want to be able to turn on all outside lights on from the house when I let the dogs outside at night so I am hoping this will help that.

Ahhh... okay okay didn't get that from the first post so thought you were just fucking lazy

Yeah, wifi switch might do the trick in that scenario! or relocate the switch to outside. Keep in mind if the shed is metal, it might act as a faraday cage and inhibit wifi signals. *not an injunear *just play one on the Internet

With Google Home inbound later this year, I'd be wary for investing in anything Nest as it might not be the way of the future for Google devices. The Nest may be something that is part of the ecosystem but it likely won't be the centerpiece it is right now. Rumor has it that Google is basically squashing Nest in favor of something new (likely Google Home).

Yup. Google owns Nest now but it has been floundering for a while now with minimal results and a rather large operating loss every year.

There's a lot of cool solar powered LED stuff for outdoors that will turn itself on when it gets dark. Don't need home automation for that.

Don't want/need it on all the time and most of the LED stuff I have seen doesn't seem to last very long once it gets dark.

I agree, the solar powered LED stuff great, until you actually use it and see how dim it is and how it stays on for an hour or two

ecobee3 Smarter WiFi Thermostat w/ Remote Sensor (2nd Gen) - Slickdeals.net

I finally gave in and picked one up at this price. Hopefully it will work with Google Home eventually.

Ok so I went to install my Ecobee3 today while home over lunch and came up with an issue. My old thermostat had 4 wires and used batteries. I have a blue common wire that is in behind it at taped off since it is not used.

I connected the Ecobee3 using the blue wire and it turned the brakers all back on. It made a clicking noise but would not turn on. So I installed the old one and everything is working now. I tested the voltage and the blue c wire and the red rh wire only give me a voltage of 8volts for some reason. So I guess I need to climb up in the ceiling to get to my furnace and see how it the blue c wire.

You have to go connect the C wire on your furnace. There's probably a port for it but it's just not hooked up. I had the same issue when I installed my Honeywell.

Why is your furnace in the ceiling???

My current house has the HVAC and water heater in the attic.

But I have no clue what size it is. Just a normal "house" size I guess. Not mansion or estate or anything.

All the houses in the Houston 'burbs that I've been in have had the same. Even the rich people with big houses.

Ah ok, yeah in Houston I'm guessing all the furnaces are smaller because you don't need them. The furnaces we have here have to sit on concrete because of weight and how much heat they put out (fire risk if in the attic). Also our attics are not insulated since the insulation sits on the bottom of the rafters and there's nothing under the roof itself so it would be super inefficient to put the furnace up there.

Hmm. Yeah, that probably makes sense. Now that I think about it, in Colorado, the furnace was in the basement on the slab.

Both houses I have owned down south my furnaces have been in the ceiling. I have not exactly figured the exact location out of the new ones but I know they are not in the garage. The furnaces are smaller cause I have seperate 1st and second floor heat and AC in the house. Going to have to try and get up there next weekend as heading to the US. Open this weekend.

+1 I had to connect mine too. It should be labeled as to where to connect it.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's the reason haha. I have a 100k BTUH furnace which is probably quite a lot more powerful, bigger, and heavier than what you have down south.

Those who have furnaces in the ceiling... do you have a basement? My *guess* is you don't and to save space on the lived spaces the builders opted to put them in the attic.

So went into the attic crawspace today and found the C wire unhooked. It was almost like it had come undone even since the wire was stripped and the screw was not all the way tight. Hooked it up and now have my Ecobee3 and 3 sensors connected and programmed. I did learn one thing while up there. It appears my first floor is a furnace heat and my second floor is a heat pump instead. Kind of dissapointed in that as I thought both floors had furnace heat really.

Now I am debating if I want to both with hooking up my Honeywell upstairs or just waiting a while to buy another Ecobee3 so I can control everything with the same app.

Anyone want to buy a Honeywell Wifi Smart Thermostat for $100? If so I will create a thread in the blackmarket to follow the rules.

Do you have a model # or link to specs?

I've got an older Honeywell 7-day 4-time programmable unit but I'd really like to be able to customize a bit more (i.e. every other Wednesday, turn on cooling later, sort of thing). I might be interested if it fit the bill.
