I wish it had temp sensors built in that would relay information to the Nest.

I would need at least 3x$129. Can't see that happening. Nice that it will turn off the heat if CO2 problem, but don't think that's a must have feature since my CO2 alarm would have no problem waking me up. The only beneficiary of turning off the heat would be my dog if no one was home. Hmm, maybe I do need.

Ohh they do extend the auto-away feature of the nest though! Which is just what I was looking for as my thermostat is not in a room we often use!

I would need 7 x $129.
Yeah, no. Not until the kids are out of college. I'll keep not using auto-away and will change the batteries in all of my detectors on 12/21 like I have been.

The sizzle in the Steak
Ridiculously priced I'd need around 10 of them
I don't think this really adds anything to the current smoke/carbon monoxide detectors I have.

Yea definitely way over priced.

I don't see why you have to replace ALL of your detectors with these. I'd just do it in the high traffic / guest visible areas. So I'd only need like two.

I would need 4...but you dont have to replace ALL the units....at least not right away.
I knew they were going to release this...just didnt know when...I might start replacing mine 1 at a time...as my current smoke detectors are starting to shit the bed.
They are pricey...but looking at alarms with all the bells and whistles...they can get to be $80/each.
Nest should offer some kind of bulk discount.

A Nest bundled with 2 smoke detectors for $350? I'd bite.
Yea, I don't see why you'd have to replace them all. Unless what you care about is the light... To me I would want it for the wave off feature in the kitchen.

I'm not keen on the wave-off feature (my first level smoke detector is on the other end of the house from the kitchen) -- best for me would be the battery low warning, kind of defeats the purpose if I can't get a warning from every detector because then I'm still pre-emptively changing them all out so I'm not woken by the chirp in the dead of night.
And it always happens in the middle of the night in the dead of winter because that's when the house gets coldest and the battery voltages sag.

Out of curiosity what's the layout of your house that you have so many? I have a new decent sized house (4 bdrm, 3k+ sqft) and only have 3 (+1 in the basement). All bedrooms are upstairs and 2 of the detectors are outside of those bedrooms and the other is on the main floor.
I'd be in for buying 3, but yeah with 7-10...no way.

I'm trying to think but I believe my house is the same way. One in the kitchen, one in the basement, one in the hallway upstairs. Three total in the entire place. 4 bed, 2.5 bath here.
Different local codes I guess?

I've seen lots of people talking about how many detectors they'd have to replace.

You can get away with less in CO.

If only replace on or two with a nest it defeats the "smoke in X room" feature if you don't have a nest at every location.

Code here is one in each bedroom (4), and one outside the bedrooms on each floor including the basement (3).

No love for PC users! Need a smart phone to take advantage of all the features of Nest Protect. I can setup Nest thermostat with my PC, but not Nest Protect. Stupid!

It's been said before; Dan is nuts!
I see no reason for a tablet or smart phone. It amuses me to no end when at dinner everyone is having to play with their phone. I think some people would actually go mad if there were a prolonged phone outage. They must be better than crack!
Back to my original post; I can access my Nest thermostat with my PC, but not Nest Protect. Maybe it's a sinister scheme to sell more iPhones?

I think we may get both the Nest and one Protect for the kitchen. We've been considering replacing that detector anyway so why not.
I wish, however, that the Protect could be a wifi extender. How cool of a feature would that be?

So I found a used Nest on craigslist. It looks great, in box, and has everything. Listed at $95. But, it's a Gen 1. I bet I could probably get it for $80...
Would you do it?
I mean hell I could get that plus a Protect for less then buying the Gen 2 new...
Only difference in slimmer profile, front grill changed, and more connections for compatibility on the back right?

Yup, so far gen1 and gen2 run the same software. Only really need gen2 if you require the additional compatibility.
Here is a link that explains what gen2 has that gen1 doesn't.

Nest Mobile Gets Update With Redesign, Nest Protect Compatibility
http://www.macrumors.com/2013/11/14/...compatibility/
Nest has updated its Nest Mobile app to version 4.0, adding a brand new design, new features for Nest Thermostat management and compatibility with the Nest Protect smoke detector.
The Thermostat icon turns black if a room is cooling or isn't heating and will turn orange if it's heating and blue if the AC is on. The Protect icon is green if everything in the home is OK and will turn yellow or red if there's a Heads Up or Emergency Alarm notification respectively.
The Protect section of the app allows users to see the status of all their installed Protect smoke detectors in their home on a single page listed by room name. The app also alerts users as danger escalates or subsides with messages and push notifications.
Users with dual fuel or heat pumps get new features as well, including Quiet Time to silence stand-alone humidifiers and dehumidifiers at certain times, and, if users have both Thermostat and Protect, shut down the heating system if there's a CO emergency.
The 4.0 update is being pushed to Thermostats automatically over the next couple of days. Nest notes that users should check "Technical Info" within "Settings" to see if their Thermostat has received the update. The app update is available now.
Nest Mobile is a free download on the App Store. [Direct Link]
The app is getting a full redesign: since you control both Nest Protect and the Nest Learning Thermostat from one place, we updated the mobile app to fit—and work better—for both. You won’t have to turn the phone sideways to set your Thermostat to Away or view settings and things will get a lot more interesting when you connect a Nest Protect.
The interface of the app has been updated to give users all the information they need at a quick glance, including weather, the ability to change a user's status from "home" to "away" without putting the phone into landscape mode, a dynamic Nest thermostat icon and a dynamic Nest Protect icon. The Thermostat icon turns black if a room is cooling or isn't heating and will turn orange if it's heating and blue if the AC is on. The Protect icon is green if everything in the home is OK and will turn yellow or red if there's a Heads Up or Emergency Alarm notification respectively.

I have both a 2G Nest and a Protect on my Christmas/30 birthday wish list. Lol
Yes, that's what my life has come to. Asking for thermostats and smoke detectors as cool gifts.

if you read the fine print on their website...they have a NEST Protect for homes with security systems....that is a special model that will be released in the first half of 2014 and will require pro installation to work with homes that have an existing hard wired security system.
I have one...we never use it, and while I'm sure there are advantages to it...I doubt I would swing for that model...but I'll wait for the specs.

I actually just tore out our Brinks system, and left a few big holes in the walls, because it was nothing but a major PITA.
But yea I saw that too. So many cool things they could do with the Protect. I mean, wifi extenders/repeaters, hello!

Easy install, easy set up.
2 complaints:
The pathlight puts out almost no light. This can be good or bad. I'll try it again tonight after the kids to to bed.
The replacement batteries are INSIDE the unit. So you have to take it off the mount, disconnect it, and open up the casing to change the battery. That's annoying but not the end of the world.
Otherwise simple clean and works.

Couple other small gripes...well one might be big for some.
The app does not allow you to test or hush the protect...that annoys me, and Nest says its for safety reasons...Im hoping if enough people want it, they will enable it.
The Nest does not use the yellow wire...which is the interconnect wire that hooks all the smoke alarms to each other. Nest interconnects via Wifi...so if you plan on going Nest, I guess plan on changing them ALL out...$$$
I'm still happy with it, for what it is...and since I only have 4 in my condo...I'll slowly change them all over time.
