Nest Thermostat

I updated my app, just wondering when it will hit my thermostat. I think I'm saving, I know it definitely helps me manage my temps easier and I have more control over my thermostat. The remote access is one of the greatest parts and I can see when/if I'm saving, compare to previous months/years. I'm happy with the purchase.

^There is only so much you can do with a thermostat. So when that day happens it'll be perfection and no one will care about the lack of updates.

It's like a $10 difference...right? Lol

Filter reminder is worthless . . .
to me. Just checked with Nest support and it reminds you every 1,000 hours! Maybe the next update will allow you to set the number of hours, like my old $80 thermostat did.

That seems like a lot of operation between filters. I wouldn't use it anyway -- my air cleaner has its own lights that tell me when to clean the pre-filter and when to clean the main elements.

Werd, still loving mine. My buddy just moved into his new home and is running 2 Nests for his dual furnace system, works great.
The Nest is also sold on Amazon now if you want to avoid tax (if you don't pay sales tax on Amazon).

One on the right for me
Got one for the parents for xmas. Just had it installed the other week. So far it works well. Especially being able to control it while out of town.

Does the Nest Learning Thermostat need batteries?
The Nest Learning Thermostat is equipped with a self-recharging lithium-ion battery.
The Nest Learning Thermostat battery charges its battery from the low voltage wires on your heating and cooling system.
It doesn’t need a power adapter or charger. The lifetime of the battery is about 7-10 years.
Is the battery user replaceable? If so is it a standard battery that Radio Shack would have?

Does too! Mine arrived with a rundown battery and and it will not function in this condition. Needs to be charged with a mini USB cable.

I went ahead and installed a Gen 2. Everything seems good so far. I took the extra step of connecting a C wire since I had an available wire and hooking it into my furnace was simple. I didn't like the idea that the thermostat would try to suck power from the H wire if there was no C wire hooked up.
I haven't had any wireless issues either.

If they offered wireless sensors I'd go buy one right now...

What kind of sensors are you interested in? I think an inside motion sensor that plugged into a wall outlet would be beneficial for me.

Our thermostat is way outta the way. Kind of defeats what the Nest does, partially, no?

Mine is in the dining room, which almost never has any traffic. I have to disable auto-away because it thinks we're never home.
The right way for me to fix it would be to move the thermostat to the main living area, but I'd prefer multiple remote sensors that I could plug into outlets.

One suggestion I saw posted about auto away I think could have potential. Since the Nest is on the wifi, why not have it check for the presence of known wifi enabled phones? No phones on the wifi = no one home. Seems simple to me. Maybe they will do something like that in the future.
So far mine hasn't done anything it's not supposed to. I like looking at the energy usage on the website. I also like that it has silent relays. No clicking when it turns the hvac on/off.

Yep, I've got mine to detect if either my wife or I are home. All based upon our iPhones.

I was highly considering this as a christmas present for my parents. My dad loves techy stuff and he would have loved this. My mom would have been like you got us a... thermostat?
I was about to bite, but $230 or whatever it was for a thermostat was just too much, when we dont use it THAT much. And we have ours at home kind of programmed, well for the winter at the time I was considering it. Right now I dont think they even turn it on.

The sizzle in the Steak
As clever as the Nest Learning Thermostat can be, its intelligence only extends as far as the front door: it hasn't really been aware of how neighbors or the seasons affect our power bills. Nest Labs is improving that connection to the outside world through Nest Energy Services, a new program that links its device to the collective, cloud-based knowledge of utility companies. When owners are with an Energy Services-aware provider, the thermostat will know when to brace for an energy "rush hour" and automatically limit its cooling during peak (read: expensive) periods. It also gives a heads-up for seasonal discounts that fine-tune the temperature schedule over the course of a few weeks. Unlike previous utility-guided approaches, Nest users can always retake control if they genuinely can't stand the heat.
Only Austin Energy, Green Mountain Energy, Reliant and Southern California Edison have lined up for the synced climate control so far, although Nest is sweetening the deal by expanding utility-based discounts for the thermostat itself. Customers of National Grid can get an immediate $100 rebate through Nest, while those who sign up with Reliant can still receive their thermostats for free with certain plans. The deals are calculated tradeoffs for companies likely to recoup their investment down the road, but they could represent big wins for homeowners still jittery about paying up front to save money later.

so, my nest pissed me off last night.
sound asleep by 10pm and I wake up sweating at about 12am. tapped the Nest App on my phone to lower the A/C, only instead of seeing the temp, I'm met with a question mark.
As I start to investigate the question mark through helpful popups through the Nest App, it says the Nest has been disconnected from my home network for about 2 hours.
As I lay in bed, sweating, I finally get the urge to check out the thermostat itself.
it's off and a little green light is blinking.
the A/C is OFF. wtf, I have work the next morning and cant sleep in these conditions! I know, first world problems.
I disconnect The Nest face from the base and investigate.
everything is connected.
and no one takes the face off of the base, so nothing would be fucked with underneath....
hop on the internet and couldnt find a definite answer...
then I find that if its blinking red, the battery is low.
however, the light is green.
I decide to trouble shoot it as if it were red, and plugged the face into a USB cable. nothing.
its past 1230 and I really need to go back to bed, but not in the sweltering heat.
I finally attach the Nest face back to the base on the wall. and it works.
except it gives a low battery warning.
Once, I got it set to a comfortable setting, it says its 89 degrees in the house and will take 2 hours to cool to desired temp. Jesus H. Christ.
When I get back home from work today, I'm plugging it up to a USB port and letting it charge.

Are you using a "C" wire?

edit.
actually, now i'm confused. I have the first generation nest and I'm using all the wires that attach to the left side.
Ive had the nest for over a year now.
Just checked the installation guide for the 1st generation Nest, and Im using the left side.

Without a C the Nest is supposed to try to suck some voltage off the other wires but there are many complaints about that not always working. The best bet is to add a C if you can. My hvac cable had an extra wire that wasn't connected to anything. So I used that extra wire to connect to the C lug on my hvac.
If you don't have any extra wires maybe you can fish a new one to the hvac?
