Nest Thermostat
Finally got my hands on one (well it arrives today). Designed by former Apple VPs/Engineers that left so start, a thermostat company.
We'll see how much money it saves me, but it definitely has a coolness factor to it. It self learns my habits, I can control it remotely and with my iPhone as well so pretty cool in case I realized I forgot to turn down the heat or what not. Even have the home warmed up and cooled down before I get home!

Wow that's the coolest thermostat I've ever seen (probably the first and only time I'll ever make that exact statement). How much these thingies go for?

Looks pretty sweet... but we have always used programmable thermostats. Mon-Fri is pretty much the same routine, so it's easy to program it so it's warm/cool when we wake up, off (or low) during the day when we're at work, warm/cool when we walk in the door, goes off at night, separate timing for each weekend day since patterns are different versus the week, etc.
Not sure I see the $250-$350 per thermostat appeal. Am I missing something?

A *really* good programmable thermostat is less than $100. A decent 5+2
programmable (one program for 5 week days, one for weekend days) is around $25. - I don't "get it"

The guts are basically a computer, much like an iPhone or iPod. its has wifi, a cpu, etc.
Also, as you program it, it LEARNS. And after about 7 days of you programming it...it takes over and programs itself based on how you use. If you make any changes, it relearns.
And of course the cool look factor.
Being able to control it remotely via an iPhone is HUGE to me.

Its cool, but couldn't those apple engineers impart their wisdom on something a little more worthwhile?
There are tons of things that need their human interface wisdom.

That said...I hate my thermostat and when this was announced I thought "why the hell didn't someone do this sooner?"
So, I think its pretty worthwhile.

As I first stated, its a luxury item. Which is why, as much as I want one, I'm not running out put my order in even though they are finally back in stock.

^ I'm not going to lie... if we didn't have 3 thermostats (plus one over the garage when it's done), I'd seriously consider it!! But $400 for 4 versus $1000 for 4 when talking thermostats is a huge difference. That said, I'll never say never
Just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something else other then the cool/luxo/gadget factor.

Sarlacc hit it on the nail. Its a luxury item and has a coolness factor. There's a ton of people out there that don't need a smartphone, but they have one because its cool! Plus the programming term is used loosely here, it really programs it self.
I definitely would not recommend it to you Junior, 4 thermostats? haha that's a lot. Better off using that money for home automation.
That doesn't even look nice! :

If these were control4 compatible, I would have bought them. Instead, I ended up with the C4 tstat, which were around $220 each. Can be controlled from any iOS device, on-screen (TV), etc.
If nest would integrate into some of the home automation gear like control4, it would be sweet. Otherwise, I'll take the integration component over a learning-based tstat.
Also, and very unfortunate, nest is getting sued by Honeywell. While patent disputes go on forever, I wouldn't want to be startup going against a giant.

Installation was a snap, even came with wall plates if required. Took less than 10 mins to install and configure. Now I can monitor my home's temp remotely. Pretty slick!

I don't get it?
I come home and the house is cold, I turn the system on and it gets warm. I come home and the house is hot, I turn the system on and it gets cool. System is large enough that it only takes about 5-10 minuets to be comfortable. I have actually programed my programmable thermostat to hide the programing options. It's lonely being a dinosaur!

but on the programming part, I've never used it.
My HVAC system cools and heat VERY quickly, so no need for programming.

I don't see the sliced bread. On my old HVAC system, I had to flip from heat to cool and move the temp bar.
With the new Lennox system, I set the general parameters to 75/68 (above 75, AC cuts auto in and below 68 the heat auto cuts in) and have it to auto reach 70 during the mornings and 70 during the 6 to 8 hours.

I do as well, and my home is so well insulated, that combined with a large size HVAC system....I rarely have to adjust the thermostat.
I flip it on and off as needed. The house gets cooled and heated in minutes.

I'm surprised you have to adjust the temperature so much. You live in a relatively newer constructed dwelling.

In the summer, I get warm easily, and the majority of our windows all face south and follow the path of the sun. So we get lots of sunlight, yay!, and all of its heat. Plus I'm on the 2nd Floor.
The mornings and evenings are usually fine, since I live mile from the ocean and we tend to stay overcast longer in the mornings and the air is cooler in general. But once it starts to get over 74 on my thermostat it gets uncomfortably warm.
So, I usually adjust during the day at some point, and in the evening. If its gets to be over 80...sometimes I am adjusting midday as well if I am home.
I just don't like to be warm, I prefer cool/cold indoors.

Nest short coming . . .
All the other thermostats I have used had an option to program the fan only to run at set hours for a set amount of time so the HEPA filter would filter the air. I had it set to run 5min every hour, the NEST will not do this. I guess that could include it in a future update.
