My washer died :(

I have a standard non HE topload washer that I bought new 4 years ago. Last night my wife noticed that after the water filled the washer didn't do anything. I open the lid and I smell electrical burn . We have wanted to get an HE combo for a while now but the money just isn't there. After some research it seems that the motor has gone out on the washer and a new motor is almost as much as I paid for the washer. So I have some choices 1. Buy a new non HE washer. 2. Buy a front load HE washer 3. Buy a top load HE washer 4. Buy a front load or top load HE with HE dryer.

I don't know how long the current dryer is going to last so we thought we should probably get the matching dryer now. I know there are pro's and con's to each and I know that my wife really wants a front loader.

Thoughts?

If you don't need the dryer, and money is tight...DON'T buy a new dryer.

Buy one when it fails.

If efficiency (lower cost of operation) is what you are after...get a front load HE.

Get a HE front loader now, if you're sure repair costs are 75% or more of the cost of a replacement top loader.

Hey, where the heck is the "Whiskers" poll option? Doesn't the absence of said option result in a ?

Update: So we went to the store set to purchase a top load HE washer and possibly a dryer. After we some research at the store it turned out that we could get an amazing deal on a front load HE combo. The price was almost identical to the top load and stacking them would give use more storage space at home. So we made our purchase and went home.

Later I was taking the old washer out to the trash when I saw something hanging out the bottom. After much research and troubleshooting it seems that the noise suppression ring had slipped down and stopped the clutch. Put it back together and it seems to work perfectly. We were able to return our purchase and we are now using our old washer. It was bitter sweet because we really wanted the new set but its nice to save that money

Best Buy, They said we could have even used them for 30 days and still returned the purchase with no restocking fee.

Best Buy has REALLY loosened up their return policy this year in order to compete because they are in trouble.

So now, all returns are 30 days opened or unopened, used or not, electronics too. I was very surprised but they needed it. Their return policy was always shit.
