It gets it out of your eyes. Ours is the same way and even with me being 6'3" the vent prevents any steam or smoke from getting in my face.

An ideal set up is like what soopa showed. That looks pimp. However, unless you're building a house or totally re-doing your kitchen it's kinda hard to adapt that style into an existing kitchen.
Since the bulider doesn't offer that option, fdl, the microwave over the range is fine. Looks a hell of a lot better than sticking it on the counter.

Most above the range microwaves come with the option to set the fan vent for vent to outside or to vent through a charcoal filter and back into the kitchen (if you don't have outside venting.

I might charge you $80 at the most, probably $60 if your kitchen is above or close to the panel. Hell I'd do it for a case of beer if you asked me during the rough-in

I think it would be more difficult to grab pots on the back burrner if the microwave was there instead of a hood.
Here is a pic of the kitchen before I swapped out the range. Would a microwave be okay here or take up too much room?![Dunno](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/dunno.gif)

doopstr, I put in a over the stove microwave to replace an old hood vent. It fit fine, and doesn't take away as much room as you would think. The microwave dosn't come out that far so its getting to pots/pans in the rear isn't a problem. Since you already have a hood vent, most microwaves have some sort of hook up for external venting (rear, top or both). I would go for it.

Those of you with over-the-stove microwaves, do any of you have vertically challenged SO or children that have trouble reaching it? My fiance is just shy of 5' and didn't like the suggestion of putting the microwave up so high.
