How much room do you need for a pool table?
I realize they vary in sizes, etc... But is there a rule of thumb for room on each side, regardless of table size? I'm sure google would be helpful, but would like opinions here.
Thanks.
Thanks.

You just want to make sure you can use the sticks. In another note, dont get one unless you are an avid player...

I play when I'm in front of one... Avid? No, but do enjoy it.
I assume you're saying this because they take up a shit ton of space and most just end up becoming a table which people put crap on and never use?

Of all these types of things we bought - pool table, jacuzzi, ping pong table, gym equipment, the pool table was really the only one we regretted. It took up a lot of room for something we used for a few months. The others we use more. When we bought this house we made the previous owners take theirs with them. I dont miss it one bit.

I think you need at least 3-4 feet around all sides. We purchased a regulation slate table while in our first house. We were in our early 20's at the time.
My table was used at least twice a week and frequently much more. I used it for cheap entertainment as we could not afford to go out much. It was worth every penny that I paid for it. We sold it to the buyers of our house at the end of five years. It was in our finished basement so we had plenty of space.

I'd say about 60 inches as that's around the length of a pool cue; that way you don't have walls in the way of cue when your trying to aim or break.

One of my friends had one in their dining room area. Shots along one border were impossible to take with a regular cue so they bought a miniature cue stick that was 1/2 the size of a regular one that worked out well if the wall is a problem.

I'll take pics when I get home, but I have a pool table in my "living room". 3 of the 4 sides have no interferences, but one wall is probably 2-3 feet from the table. On some angles you have to use a short stick to shoot, but it's not that terrible.

all work and no play
Pool table = gym equipment = hot tub. With that said, if you have an extra room for one then do it as they are fun to have if you like to throw parties. Dedicate a room as a game room, insert pool table, a couple of pinball machines, and a couple of old school coin-op video games and then you have something. I suggest an Adams Family pinball machine. ![Big Grin](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

My cousin had one in his finished basement growing up. They also had a ping pong table you could throw on top of it that worked quite well. His parents had a lot of parties, so it got used a lot. Family tournaments on Christmas Eve were always fun.
Then when my cousin and I got old enough to have parties, it really got used a lot for beer pong (with the ping pong boards on top, of course). We would also shoot games of pool and play ping pong while drinking before going out to the bars and while hungover the next day, so it got used a lot. I'd say the ping pong more than pool, though.
I say go for it...your kids will love you in the future
