Gas line run for grill?
Gas line run for grill?
Anyone know how much it is to extend a gas line to the outside (from basement) for a gas grill hookup? The guy can either go through the siding or he will drill through the foundation. How much should I expect to pay for this? I had the builder install a 'T' already so the guy does not have to cut into main line (less labor). Sounds like it is pretty expensive still. I also have the choice of black iron pipe like I have in my basement now or what sounds like flexible hose.
Any ideas or experience out there?
Thanks. Not much fun looking at my new grill sitting in the garage waiting for the line to be run. But I do not want to get taken for a ride either. I will need to shop around I guess.

If you can go through the siding, you could do it yourself. The big cost would be drilling the foundation and the run will determine how much needs to be either trenched or run along the house.
Pretty simple if you alredy have a T in the line. Literally run the black iron from the T to your patio and include a valve and a regulator toward the end of the run.

I have helped a buddy do gas fitting in my house. It certainly isnt rocket science that isnt beyond the abilities of a "careful" DIY.
See LINK for some tips.
I would run black pipe to a location near where you want the grill and put a quick disconnect on hooked up to a flexibile hose so that you can move it around if you want. If you do black pipe all the way to the grill you have to fix it in place. IMO.

Totally agree with Zippee. In our case we would have been required to get permits for that work. This is really not a DIY type of project. Nothing is funny about a gas leak.

After seeing it done, I could do it myself. However, I'd still pay to get it done.
$800 is way too much though. I went to a local fireplace/grill specialty store and had one of their guys come out and do it. I think he also worked for the gas company??? Anyway, I didn't pay over $150 for it.

I just looked into getting my new grill tied directly to my propane tank (175 gallon for one of the fireplaces) and the estimate came to around $325 +/-.
I decided to "borrow" one of my dads extra propane tanks for the winter instead (as an extra one in case I run out while cooking a meal - for some odd reason he has 5 right now
) while I ponder the true value of having it hardlined..
Almost 1/2 the price of the grill just to have it hardlined seems kind of crazy to me. But who knows, maybe I'll change my mind in the spring.
Right now it costs $14 in my area to refill the small tanks... Even that seems high to me. I remember paying like $8 about 2 years ago... For now, I guess I'll stick with the $14 fill-ups.

We are kinda in a holding pattern waiting to hear this guys official quote, plus we are trying to imagine where our future patio would be (height wise) since it would be raised...I hear what you are saying - when it costs more to hook the grill up than it cost for the actual price of the grill - something smells funny - and it ain't leaky gas.
Despite being a huge DIY, I do not want to mess with the gas myself - while I TOTALLY agree it is not really difficult to do, just do want any issues, and if there are issues, I want Insurance to cover me. My town requires permits as well. Just sucks to pay some guy that much. I will try to find another equally qualified guy and get second price. I do not want some crackhead doing the install - so it is worth a few extra bucks to me, just not sure yet of my definition of "few"

Thanks guys for the replies..
