the soil in my front yard is always dry no matter how often I water it. (unless it rains for a day or 2).

Any suggestion?

Drip irrigation and some sort of ground cover (grass, etc.)

Grass needs about 1 inch of water a week in the summer. If you plant seed in the spring it will need more because the young grass will not be able to withstand the heat.

Depends, but November, even in CA is probably not the time to be seeding. The grass type will determine the time and temp to seed based on your hardiness zone. I actually used Roundup for my entire yard after the builder was done grading. This gave me a clean slate, I hydromulched as it was 25,000 sq ft of lawn. The water bill for 2 months was $800/mo, but i only had to do it once.

You need to look at all of the factors before planting or seeding.

Prep of area
Type of plant
Temp
Time of year
Sunshine
Hardiness zone

Good luck

Texas in summer means water for plants or a dead yard.

Ship some of your mud down here and I will ship some 100+ days your way.

The dirt is dry is it because there is not enough bacteria in the dirt to chew up the dirt?

Wha? Seriously, WTH are you talking about with bacteria in the dirt?

Go to any gardening website or google for the type of grass you want to plant and research. St Augustine and Bermuda are the two most common, with fescue and tiff as more designer grasses.
