It's cheap because it's not hard. Do some youtube work and you'll find that you can DIY a faucet install in about 20 minutes (if no new plumbing is required) and the toilet will take you about 30 minutes. The vanity top just lays on with a layer of silicone (if granite) so if you can lift it, you can install it. Sink hookup is also a piece of cake. Save yourself the $180 and DIY. I did all of the above for our guest bath in a Saturday morning.

It's cheap because it's a guy working for cash that doesn't have to pay anything to the .gov or insurance co.

I can eventually DIY this job since that's what I've been doing in my house, but this weekend is my anniversary so I don't want to tie up too much time for work stuff as I got a ton of other things to do. I just got my bonus so I'll hire someone. Plus the guy I'm hiring is my friend's buddy. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't getting ripped off.

Comes down to if you trust the guy or not. If he's a pro doing this for side money then go for it but if he's just some dude who can do it (like I would be), then I'd be wary about that price. You're absolutely not getting ripped off in terms of price but I can't say for results since that's down to the guy.

Yeah he is a contractor. He's doing my friend's entire apartment. Flooring, electrical, etc.

I'm not trying to pick on you or anything, and I'm sure he's fine to install a sink, but if he does plumbing, electric, flooring, and etc, he is not a contractor, he is a bullshitter.

Welcome to Miami, nobody's licensed for most work. We love our cheaper immigrants. I'd only go licensed for major work but not this. I appreciate the concern and I know you're not picking on me. FYI, my friend told me about his background. Doubt he'd lie to me since we work together and I've known him a few years. Like you all said, it's simple plumbing.

Anyone got light fixture recommendations? I need a dining room light fixture but it can't hang to low as the ceiling isn't high. I'll take pics tonight. Locally I tried HD, Lowes, and a place called Pego Lamps but nothing yet.

Lots of stuff came in that I didn't photograph because too busy but among them my new child, LG OLED65C6P.

by https://www.flickr.com/photos/53052618@N08/, on Flickr

New furniture in the family room allowed the old 50" to get mounted there and then upgraded to this 65" in the living room. Also put a new chandelier that took hours to put together and install.

Jesus after 3 mos finally got the vanity for the half bath. Fucking Lowe's. Good news is that they cut the price like 35% for their fuckup and free next day shipping. Going in on Thursday. I think the last thing for "Phase 1" is a dining room fixture. Phase 2 likely is hurricane protection, new french doors, and backyard seating/decoration. 3 is probably gutting bathrooms upstairs.

Some 3D Marvel movies finally came in the mail and we watched some Civil War. I watched the airport scene twice to show my daughter and we loved it. Such a well done scene and the 3D just enhances it nicely.

Finally got the bathroom done

Want to change bedroom doors as some are damaged and do not close correctly. I'd prefer as simple as possible with bore and hinges already cut out. I think the frames themselves are ok but I need to double check. Any tips?

You won't find any that are door only with the hinges and bores already cut because those things need to be aligned with the door frame. You can buy the whole pre-hung door with frame, hinges, and bore already cut as one but a door only will not be drilled and mortised.

I did this last year (slab door only) and it's not too hard. If you have a router, they sell templates for the hinge mortise and kits for drilling the knob bore. Take off the old door, mark hinge/knob locations on new door, mill new door, done. Once you get set up it goes pretty fast. Ended up taking longer to stain and poly everything than it did to mill the doors.

^^^

Home Depot and Lowe's sell slab doors.

As mentioned if you have a router it makes hinge cutting so much easier. Trying to chisel out door hinges is a nightmare unless you're really good and have a very sharp chisel.

Here's the kit. It does the hinges and the lock: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-Wo...Fae0swoddjUOeg

Thanks. Technically you can lock them so yeah they can be used for general security but Associations typically frown on that. I'm leaving this one closed because the French doors need to be replaced and I don't want anymore a/c escaping. These are rated to take in "missles" aka hurricane proof.

Finally ordered new French doors. Got them with impact glass because why not. Fabricator asked if they should open from right door (left in pic aka right door from inside). Does it make sense or will it hit the wall?

I think the angle is obtuse enough where it's not an issue. Should've borrowed my kid's protractor

There are doorstops available to address this.

Agreed but what's the point if the door selected keeps hitting something (stop vs wall).

Function. If you change the swing of the door to open to the middle, will it hit furniture? Make walking out inconvenient?

In my experience most door swings are stopped short of the full hinge swing.

Just a ugly colored paved backyard with annoying mutant ficus and weeds that need constant attention. The dickbag ex-owner had questionable design choices but luckily the kitchen isn't bad as they did that.

Do you have shutters already? New windows/doors really dress up the house nicely. If you have shutters then be patient and do it when you have money. I'd love to do all the windows too but I just got accordions and I don't want to break the bank.
