Do you need an expensive vacuum?

I love my dyson too. I got it for free, by spending a bunch of travel points I had kicking around. More than half of my house is either tiled or laminate flooring.. and I have three dogs in the house currently. The vacuum makes quick work of even picking anything off of the hard surfaces.

Fiance's parents aren't a fan of vacuums for their tiled floors . They got and sweep with a broom, and then I just come in after with the Dyson to pick up everything they left behind

Buy a Neato Botvac. They are way cheaper and probably work just as well. I did tons of research before buying mine and they all said the Samsungs and Dyson robots don't really warrant the cost. The Neato more than keeps up with my Golden that sheds like a mofo since it runs every day.
For whoever was asking, I won't buy anything but a Dyson at this point. We now have the Animal stand up vac and the V6 cordless. The cordless is by far my favorite because it's way easier to use whenever it's needed rather than setting the whole thing up and plugging it in. It would be my recommendation if you're using it mostly for hard flooring. With carpet you'll want the full size one.

The Neato is used on a daily basis. It runs while we are at work and grabs the routine dust/fur bunnies around the hard flooring. It doesn't do well enough on carpet with a heavy shedding dog though. That's where the big Dyson shines. The cordless one can do carpet but the bin gets full of dog fur in about 30 seconds and you have to empty it. The bigger one just has a bigger bin and that's the only reason we still have it. If you don't have a dog or a dog that sheds, you can probably more than get by with the cordless. They have a V8 as well that is more powerful with a longer run time but it's a lot more expensive.

After using the Dyson for a week I'm going to pick up my buddies Shark that he has. He also has Dyson but he has this weird obsession with buying multiple things. Dyson for upstairs shark for downstairs... I'm like bro it's called carry the vacuum upstairs. Anyway, I'm going to use his and see which one I like better.

I love our Neato as well. Our house is pretty much all white shiny tile and some laminate with no carpet and I can't stand when it's dirty. I didn't mind sweeping and hate vacuuming the floor so when my wife suggested a Roomba, I was skeptical. I researched and ended up with Neato because it doesn't do the random all overness that Roomba does and I'm very impressed with it. It runs when we aren't home and does a great job on the tile, to the point that sweeping is pretty much useless.
That being said, it hasn't been charging and I can't figure it out (1.5 years old). In some reviews, others complain about the batteries so I would do your research but I don't regret the purchase.

Thanks! After posting this, I started to read about this and someone said if you tell Neato you put a new battery in, it could start to work again. I flipped through the menus, found the new battery option and it works! I think I'll grab a battery just in case though.

We had purchased a dyson cinetic allergy and it works really nice. We ran the decently new kenmore intuition which was well rated. Then we ran the dyson and picked up almost as much as there was in the kenmore. And the kenmore had first pickins on the fur and dirt.Thew dyson was just acting as a crumbsnatcher and picked up so much.

Yup, I tried that first. Still no go but the battery was two years old at that point so hence the issue. This weekend I'm going to wrap the exterior surfaces in felt. Every time it bangs into something, I cringe about the damage it's doing. A little spray adhesive and some felt should do the trick.

We had a moderately good Bissel vacuum given to us by a friend when we moved to town and got a new house - he had just decided to upgrade to a Dyson + a couple "robot" vaccuum disc thingies that roam around on their own. It worked for years fine, no problem, until we brought it to our kid's violin school where students took turns vacuuming once a week and they managed to break it somehow.
I bought a used Dyson vacuum that looked like it had been used about once, cost about $400 new, I paid $25 for it during a special 1 day half price sale, and I also had a special coupon good for "one item half price no exclusions" so I got half price on a half price sale item selling for 1/4 or the new price already before the sale + coupon. Free is about the only way to beat that. Then one day a fluorescent bulb shattered and spilled mercury on our carpet. In a panic we vacuumed it up, and then put the vacuum outside. Back then there was a local EPA guy for our region and when we called he came out with a mercury detecting machine - he used the machine around where the mercury had spilled and we determined that the carpet should be removed (which I did right away). My wife said we shouldn't bring the vacuum I had used on the mercury back in the house and I agreed, it became a secondary garage vacuum (I also have a good Fein shop vac out there). So, with the Dyson eliminated, I bought another of the same ones, this time the best deal I managed to get was a little under $200 (half price).
My Fein shop vac is a nice machine, but, the filter bag/tub design has a flaw: it has a flexible plastic top and where the stitching is it weakens the plastic so that it cracks. After seeing how expensive replacements are, I happened to see a 12 gallon stainless steel 6 HP wet/dry shop vac on sale at Lowe's (left over from Black Friday) for $49! I got one of those.
At some point, I'll figure out some type of glue that will work to repair my Fein.
This is like the my Fein, not my photo though, from Amazon.

So after 13 years our DC07 Animal broke enough to not fix -- the main duct which is basically the stick part of the vacuum broke where the upper and lower half are joined. I had a choice of having it repaired for $170 or buying new. My wife decided new was the way to go. We picked up a new Dyson Ball Animal 2 for $325 at the local Dyson store. Holy shit does it work. It pulled up tons of dog hair and dust that our tired old vac was missing. Highly recommended if you are in the market for a new vac.
I "repaired" the old vacuum with Gorilla tape and will keep it around as a utility vac. But it simply does not compare to the new one in effectiveness.

I've been meaning to get a decent vacuum and there's a Dyson ball for sale as the special of the day at Home Depot. Model 237358-01
Any thoughts on this vacuum? Also found it cheaper on ebay here.

I took back two sharks. One had the lint roller and the other didn't. Both had a huge amount of dog fur balled up in the roller. the Dyson had the best suction, but wasn't the best for us.

I recently ponied up for a good dust buster
BLACK+DECKER BDH2020FL Man, it sucks long and hard.
Wifey kept complaining about the battery running out on the old one, so I decided to get the best one I could find for spite (my brain works in strange ways). Glad I did though. I'll take it out to vacuum the truck, etc. It's a lot easier than dragging the hose out with the shop vac without giving up too much in suck power.... In some ways it's even better because I can get it into tighter places.
That said, if you click on the link I'll have you know I paid 85, and it's 110 at the time of this posting.

I picked up an iLife A4s from Newegg a few weeks ago for $130. Not expensive, but does a great job on hardwood floors and runs under the couch. It's really a dumb robot vacuum that auto-docks but it's got great battery life and I was so surprised at what it could do that I picked up another one for the basement.
It doesn't suck as well as our Neato and it doesn't have the room mapping, but for what it does it's perfect for us.
The iLife also an IR receiver so I can hook it up to the harmony hub/smartthings/google home and tell google to clean the house and she starts right up.

We ended up with a kenmore elite 31150. I had picked one up for $220 and it works really well. It is bagged but we'll see if it lasts as long as our other kenmores. They are 7-10 years old.
