DIY'ers...You Can Lay Carpet!!!
Just did two rooms for a friend...was my first time. Rented the equipment from Homer Depot and let er rip!
As long as you have no seams to 'mend' in the center of the room...you are golden. Probably one of the easiest ways to save money when doing a worth-while upgrade to your home.
All it took was a little sweat & muscle and we got it done in about 1.5 hours. Used a knee-kicker thingy and a 3 lb mallet/knees to straighten out the folds and excess.
I'd suggest taking a look at doing this yourself if you're a homeowner and want to upgrade the carpets. You can get carpet & pad very cheaply...it's the labor per square yard for the installation that adds up QUICK. If you can lay tile, you can lay carpet...if you have built your own deck, carpet will be no sweat...and if you have upgraded a major component of your vehicle, this is 10x times easier.

To have this done professionally, add $2 a yard to remove old carpet if needed, another $6-8 a yard to install. Basically, you are paying less than half when you do it yourself.
About $8 a yard will get you very, very nice carpet...Berber, Mohawk, etc.

I also like to do my own plumbing, dentistry, sometimes back surgery, and be my own lawyer. I saved $50,000 last year. j/k
Congrats on a job well done. Yeah, I have to pay a lot for carpet in the places that we sell. We get a good deal at $13 / yard installed but it's pretty cheap fleck carpet but it'll cost the average joe probably $19 / yard.

I never knew that laying carpet could be so easy. We'll probably be upgrading the carpet in the living room in a year or two and I'll give it a shot.

ive helped a buddy of mine put down carpet a couple of times it's not to bad, i found the hardest part being getting the big ass role of carpet in to the room your doing (12'-15' roles don't like 90 or 180 degree turns at all), after that its pretty easy.

Damn carpet is heavy as hell...after that, the only real tough part is the kicking/stretching.
