Condo Remodeling Updates

Sorry I have not been around lately, too busy workin on the place and all. Here are some of the pics of my place as of this weekend. I am almost done with living room and moving onto the kitchen floor / hallway. Enjoy

How the room started, for reference.

I bought a single 79" X 23" white bookshelf for $39.99 from IKEA.

I added a bottom ledge to the shelves, LED strip lighting, re-moulded the front surfaces, added on the victorian wings and left strip hinge.

After putting a single caster on the unit, I lifted and attached it to the frame.

Here's a shot of the inside of the media room. Yes, a huge jumble of wire.

I bought two additional shelves and cut them down into two drawers. The pulls and non-mortise hinges were added along with a chain for accent. The MX3000, Ipod dock and XM Radio looked great 75% way through the install.

The top cabinet holds my DVD player and is controlled through my RF controller allowing me to keep the cabinet closet. The bottom cabinet holds my video game systems and again using RF wireless controllers.

Pre-finished pictures.

This was taken before I started the hidden door cabinet.

I added this desk so I could do work and watch tv and be in the main room.

Final picture (Before cabinet installation).

That's it for now!

Hey man!

The sofa and loveseat are wallaway recliners. So, as I lean back in my recliner I eye up to the plasma.

What's nice about the wallaway recliners (Berkline) is that you can fully recline to almost a flat horizonal position I've fell asleep more than once this way.

I have a tilt mount on that plasma and it's tilted a few degrees down I like it. I originally had it on a non tilt mount, lower, i dont notice the difference. I am looking into Niles Audio ceiling mounted speakers for left / center / right. I thought it would sound like crap but a buddy of mine did it and since the speakers are rotational it was really impressive.

Great work! I love the wood floors the best! It looks like a very comfy room to sit and relax in. Also, I really like the pic you have set as your PC desktop. Very cute!

Wow, I remember the pics you posted a while ago, and it looks like it's coming along very nicely!
I've been wanting to do something like what you did with the ikea bookshelf. I was thinking of getting their Billy shelves and putting them in the closet in the TV room for DVD/CD storage, then enclosing it like you did (minus hinges) so that it looks more flush with the wall.

Just FYI, most bookshelves Ikea sells also have optional glass shelves. It could look nice for some top shelves to be glass, and add some soft lighting from the top of the bookshelf.

We've got our 50 inch plasma over a fireplace- its even higher I think that this one b/c we have an in-wall center channel speaker btwn the plasma and the mantel and it works very well. We've had our setup for almost 2 years and no complaints

Nice work. I have a Berkline wallaway also, it rocks. Where are your speakers? Also where is your media room in relation to the TV? Do you have a transmitter so the remote can control all the components in the media room?

I've been thinking about the TV over firepace thing as well, and wondering about it being too high

I don't think it would be so bad if you are reclined because your angle of view changes. I have a 25" in my bedroom with the bottom of the screen 6ft off the ground. It's ok because when I lie down I can watch it perfectly.

I put my plasma atop my fireplace a week or so ago, it's not mounted... just sitting on its stand...

It isn't so bad (and i have a tall fireplace) but i wouldn't use it for "home theater" type of viewing.

I'm thinking of getting a larger plasma and permanently mounting it because, even though it's not great for "theater" type viewing, it's pretty good for entertaining. It encourages people to stay on their feet during large gatherings, and when just a friend or two are over it encourages conversation versus staring at the tube since it's out of the way.
