Thought about it but not really sure if it would be worth all the work to try and build an enclosure for the projector and for a screen. I want a setup that is quick and easy to use. Head out, open the doors, angle the TV to where I am sitting and watch a game while I build a fire.
Definitely would be the easiest and cleanest I think. Only reason I considered making it a bit more than a wall is it might be nice to have some counter space or extra storage but it could look weird.


Location wise here is what i have been thinking about so far.

Green is where the wall/tv would go.
Orange is the typical seating locations we usually use around the fire.
Blue is the direction that face back towards the house and yard so figure shouldn't really block that direction or it could look weird.

Would have to take out one small tree only to put that wall there or else try and relocate it since it appears to be a decently growing tree.

As for the TV, I built a box that's big enough for a 55 but threw an old 46 in, just to see if it would stay water tight. It's been up for well over a year, through crazy South Florida rain storms and still going strong.
I'll grab a pic this afternoon, if your curious but I'm mounted on a wall, not a tree

Definitely would love to see a picture of your setup. I am most likely going to go the route of building a wall from two posts to mount the TV box on at this point. Just seems like the best option. I would like to make it large enough for an eventual 55 but will probaly pickup whatever great deal I can get on a fairly bright tv during black friday.

I have a regular indoor TV under a screend in porch for 2 years now and another I used outside before upgrading for a year with no issue. The moisture doesn't seem to hurt it. Plus a 50in outdoor rated TV is $2500. I can buy a lot of $400-$700 TVs that may last for 3-5 years each for that price and not have to shell out nearly as much at one time. Not to mention an outdoor TV only comes with I think a 5year warranty. I would rather take my chances.

So took some measurements last night. A straight route ends up being 23ft. It might have lots of tree roots in it cause it passes by the base of several trees. I also measured a route that stayed at least 4-5ft from the base of any tree and that route is 30ft long.



I sketched up two possible design locations. The first is where I have always thought of putting the TV. However, it does block off some extra space off to the side of the fire pit where I currently have a table. So if I ever wanted to build up an outdoor eating area that would kind of be the place do it. We don't really entertain much. An occasional get together with some friends once or twice a year is about all. The tree to the left of the bench in this picture and the tree to the right of the TV wall drawing are the trees I planned to originally mount the speakers to. If I went with rock speakers I would still probably go with that placement as well.



The second location put it near the back of the property so you really are not blocking a view to any area plus you would be able to see it from pretty much anywhere. The issue I have then is that my back is towards the house and the driveway gate to the yard. I hate sitting with my back to an entrance it just makes me uncomfortable. I do think the location definitely would look the best though so I am torn. Also putting seating in the opening to the fire pit area might make it feel more closed in a bit.

I like the second location better, but then you're looking away from the fire and staring at a TV. I think if you do the first location it would be better, just have to deal with the wire issues

Does hosting 1-2 times a year justify the need for a TV outside? Would you really use it that much?

it would be nice to be outside... I don't know about going off into the woods and sitting on a log though..... that's something more for the patio.

It isn't really for hosting people over. Was just saying the second option would be better for that. It is really just for me cause I love to have fires in the spring and fall and be outside. Love the idea of starting a fire about noon on a brisk fall day turning on the TV and spending the day outside playing with my pups and watching college football all day.

I plan to build 2-4 adirondack chairs to go along with the 3 log benches I will have out there. The stump seats will be getting replaced.

I mean I would put seating around all sides of the fire pit so you would still be looking over the fire to the TV. It would be more difficult to get the cables to the second location for sure. Getting them to the first location would be easy.

Oh wow, I thought it was going to be on the shed itself, sounds like it's freestanding now? Do you plan on making the structure water proof? Don't you have that pesky thing called weather out there? Rain/humidity/snow would wreak havoc on that TV if it weren't no?

Also, doesn't have a TV outside defeat the purpose of being outside? I dunno man, I've never once been hanging out by my firepit or playing with the pup and though, damn I wish I had my TV out here...

That is far from the fire pit. The shed is only going to house the receiver for the speakers and the TV. Nothing else going over there.

It will be free standing whatever it was going to be but it will still be in a enclose like I posted before. That enclosure will just be on a free standing wall. Kind of like a privacy slat wall.

The way I see it is it will allow me to be outside even more. I watch tons of college football on Saturdays. So most of the time I am doing that inside. Why not create a way I can do it outside. I like to have fires on the weekend too but then I can't watch college football at the same time. Why not make it so I can do both?

The TV setup on my screened in porch gets used several times a week except during the 2 hottest months of the year and 1.5 coldest months of the year. I will be able to use this one even more with the addition of heat from the fire. Just can't use it in the rain like I can the other one.

By table you just mean like some sort of shelf? Or an actual table of sorts? Not visualizing it well.

So a couple weeks ago I pest control company my neighbor was using took out my mailbox. They then came out and tried to fix it themselves but failed pretty bad overall. It is now functional but looks terrible. They said if I wasn't happy they would pay to replace it. I am not but now I need to pick a new mailbox. By the way decent looking mailboxes are apparently expensive. Especially while trying to figure out something that looks like what I had since I kind of like it. My only other thought is that I am the only house in the neighborhood that has a square mailbox post. I think that looks better personally. However, part of me wonders if I should put in a round post to match everything else.

The terrible repair attempt. I mean really using white silicone to seal it and putting screws through the face of the door when if you had opened the door and looked you would have seen the trim plate was screwed on from the inside.

I mean...take some brown paint and touch up the screw heads and caulk and don't give it another thought.

I forgot some points. It is fixed but isn't super stable. Also it bet the opening of the mailbox so much you need to use some strength to open and close it. I think he didn't hit and run as my neighbors across the street had contractors working out front that saw the whole thing happen. I got this information about who did it from them. He left a sticky note on my front door appologizing but with a dead number.

Also found out from the neighbor that is using him for pest control is that he is terrible and they are taking him to small claims court if he doesn't fix the problem. He was paid to seal their house and remove bats. They still have bats over a year later.

on my old place, our old mailbox was concrete and got nailed and was falling apart...did a little work to fix the base, framed it out and bought
a run of the mill mailbox house thingy and painted it the color of the house to match. All in probably $50 in materials.

Do NOT file a homeowners claim for something like this. I learned the hard way that filing stupid little claims against homeowners will backfire in the event you need/want to change companies.

In regards to the mailbox, I've always been a huge fan of cedar posts with a nice metal box on top. So much so that it's what I did this year.

I think it was $50 for the post and $60 for the mailbox. The shockingly expensive part of the ordeal was the house numbers at $5 a number. Our house number is 5 digits long and needs to be on both sides of the box/post...

I remember when I was 16, my first winter driving I was rushing out of the neighborhood and didn't anticipate the icy turn and ran right through my neighbor's mailbox and sent it flying across their yard and ended up in the middle of their front yard in my car. I was going to be late for school so I drove off but felt guilty about pulling the hit and run, later that night I walked down to confess and tell them that I did it. I was so freaking nervous I almost didn't go, but I knocked on their door and they told me, oh don't worry about it, we have mailbox insurance! WTF? I'd never heard of such a thing, but the neighborhood was so uppity that it was required when you bought your house. I was both shocked that such a thing existed and relieved that I didn't have to pay for repairs to their mailbox being a poor hs student, but who the hell knew there was such a thing? lol

Wires are for the speakers on the house, which have since been hooked up. Almost bought a bigger TV this weekend and when I do, I'll paint the wall black so it blends better.
