Can you caulk over step flashing where roof butts up against a wall?
...that's all. I have a bit of moisture in the wall cavity and it is either from a window that needs caulking or the flashing from a roofline at waist height directly behind the wall. Theres a 8'x20' roomon the first floor, with a roof and crawl space above. Where that roof butts up against the second floor bedroom exterior wall, there have been some issues. We have repaired three small spots in the plaster wall and it isnt working. I need to figure out the culprit.
Ideally, i would like to get someone to reflash this area of the roof next year. But can i add roof sealant over the stepped flashing? There is about a 0.25 -0.75 inch cavity on the stucco wall between the stucco and the asphalt, which runs along the roof line. I could see the step flashing tuck up behind the stucco. It is in so-so shape, but there looks to be some suspect areas where water could get in. Through a crawl space, i could see the beam directly underneath the flashing area, and it does show signs of water. However, it could be from literally 50-100 years ago. The roof is in good condition (12 years old). I presume the flashing was installed then.
So could i fill that half inch cavity with mastic sealant as a holdover? I presume in a year from now, if the roof guy rips out and replaces the flashing it wont really cause any issues.

If you're just looking to fill a gap, I'd do it with expanding foam and then caulk over that. Caulk doesn't do well when it's unsupported underneath and a half inch gap is a long way to stretch caulk.
Edit: Or put in a wood shim to fill the gap.
