Working Overnights opinion?

Wasn't really sure where to post this, But Any of you guys work Overnights or 3rd shift? Do you love it or hate it?

In my case, I hate it! I work 10-4 Friday,Saturday,Sunday,Monday. I think probably one of the worst days to be scheduled on ever. Especially when you're 18. When I'm off work (Tue,Wed,Thur) It's school or work in the morning for everyone else. On working days. When I wake up everyone is still at work or I'm to zombified to hang out Because I have Night Classes in a few hours then straight to work shortly after. Mix that in with no extra pay (suppose to) a dysfunctional sex life and no time with you're girlfriend or buddies because of conflicting schedules equals a case of mania and depression haha.

Wouldn't be bad if I worked Mon-Thur. But school on weekdays and overnight work on weekends and having work days off in the middle of the week sucks when everyone else is working or in school on you're days off! Leaving my job ASAP. Once I find another normal hour part time job.

For any of you who work/worked overnights how did you like it and how did you set up you're day to day life?:excited:

justnspace 01-21-2014 06:56 AM

sounds like you should quit.

hxrguitar 01-21-2014 07:34 AM

I would, But I need the money to mod my tl ;) after that you bet I'am lol.

justnspace 01-21-2014 08:31 AM

weirdo.
wants vs needs.
you dont need money to mod your TL.
you want money to mod your TL.

if you dont enjoy your job and or the hours, quit.
"manic hours is causing me depression"
the fuck more evidence do you need!?

on the other hand, if you need the money, graveyard shifts do provide.

I have done it most of my adult life. I do it for 7 days on 7 off. On my 7 days of working I am just in a rotation and I don't work the same time every day. Some days I can get home at 8 am and have to leave again at 4 pm. THe next night get a great night's sleep only to have to stay up the whole night the next night. Luckily I get 7 days off for my body to recuperate. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's a nightmare. The $$ and benefits are well worth it along with all the time off but it doesn't make any of the 1 am phone calls any easier.

If there is no additional pay for working nights on weekends, start looking for another job.

I worked 10P-6A for several years. I would arrive home around 6:30, eat a light breakfast and hang out until about 7:30, go to bed and wake up around 2-3P (never needed an alarm clock, heaven) and then go to the gym, workout, run errands, eat lunch and go to work. On my two days of "weekend" I generally tried to keep the same schedule. It is NOT conducive to much of a social life, especially if you are working on Friday or Saturday night, unless you like to also hang out with the same people you work with on your oddball schedule.

CLIFFS: Something has to give.

What's the pay and job description?

hxrguitar 01-21-2014 08:43 PM

Pay is Florida minimum wage $7.93 an hour. Which blows because I came from a $15-20 job detailing boats, But business got slow and I had to be let go bummer.

Job Description: Clean Bath Rooms (Woman's bathrooms are disgraceful btw)
Empty all trash Dining/Kitchen/Bathroom
Clean Fryers
Scrub floors with Bristle Brush & good ole degreaser
Wet/Dry mop
Clean Broiler
etc etc etc...

You get the drift, Just PEON work pretty much. Now the Higher ups in the franchise want me to start doing *projects* at the store I work for. Like cleaning the Ceiling AC vents and other similar stuff. People get paid like $10-12 an hour for that type of work. So I'm quitting before they make me do that.

The franchise Is trying to get blood from stone. They already don't give maintenance enough time to get all the cleaning of the store done and do it good. I'm actually scheduled to 3AM but don't get off untill 4AM because it's impossible to get everything done in that amount of time. But yet they want me to clean the AC vents on top of my normal work in that time period yeah right! Unless I'm getting paid overtime no way.

@stogie1020 Yeah for real man, That's what I'm doing tomorrow. It's a shame to. The store was literally dying! for someone to do overnight maintenance because no one wanted the job. When I said I would take it (idiot) I was hired on the spot and filled paper work out the same day. Just had to wait a little bit for my background check to come back in. And finally when they got someone who does the job right and makes that store look clean they fuck me over haha.

I don't work graveyard, but I do work the night shift (late afternoons until midnight.) Some hate it, I like it. From my experience, if you aren't enjoying the hours or are not functioning with them, then you're not ever going to. I really think it comes down to personality, honestly. A lot of the people that work my shift enjoy these hours for the same reasons I do and fit the job into their lives the same way I do. But I do know people who worked graveyard shift and they were completely unable to hang out anywhere at all, at a reasonable hour. The people I knew only did it as a way of telling employers or future employers that they're willing to put up with less-than-perfect circumstances. If you have a good employer, it should pay off.

As a matter of fact with MY work schedule, I get shit all the time from other people if I'm unable to wake up at 7AM and get to their place to help them do whatever project. :damn: However I really enjoy working these hours since it's nice and quiet, I don't get hassled like I do during day shift, I get a small bump in pay for choosing this shift, and it's super easy to get errands done around town since most people are at work. The gym is nice and mostly empty, too ;)

But hey at least you're doing it. They have a ton of job openings at my work, but nobody wants to apply mostly because they don't want to work any other shift than day shift...

OP, time to look for another job. I had classes late my freshman year of college (until 6:45pm) so I was a cashier at the 24 hour grocery store and worked until @ midnight. I got tired of that very quickly and started waiting tables. I made better money and enjoyed the work much more. They were also pretty flexible with my hours (to an extent).

stogie1020 01-23-2014 02:49 PM

If you get a job serving food/drink, you will meet way more girls than simply creeping in on them in the ladies room to clean it. :2cents:

hxrguitar 01-23-2014 11:57 PM

My employer sucks, I work for a franchised Burger King owned by Magic Burger LLC.
We're suppose to get a bump in pay working overnights. But Magic Burger won't allow it.

All good responses guys, I'm currently looking for another job as my manager won't work on my schedule with me. I told my co-workers (3 other guys) what was up. And they also talked to our manager about having rotating schedules meaning. One week I get Fri,Sat,Sun off. Then the following week the next dude get's those days off. Manager shot that down tho. I don't feel like working the overnight on weekends the rest of my time in school until I leave for the military.

On another note I'm fine with doing overnights as others had stated it's calm quiet and laid back. It's working overnights every weekend. Like I mentioned before it's destroyed my social life so it's getting depressing lol. I would rather work overnights on week days and then have the weekend to go out. As I'm 18 years old not a dad with 3 kids needing to support.

I'm going to try to get a job as a cook, bus boy, waiter something along those lines.
And hopefully get on a Afternoon/Evening schedule. Working till midnight at the latest
Especially sucks when you go on Facebook on break. And see all you're friends partying, going to downtown having fun and shit.

But it's life I guess, Good stepping stone and a eye opener not to fuck up in life. And have no choice but to have to work a job like that.

Rapture 01-24-2014 02:46 AM

Wow. Sounds like your manager is a real piece. He was desperate for a night guy, you came along, now he's unwilling to try and keep you around. And no bump in pay if you work a night shift? No wonder they're not getting any applicants...

ucf_bronco 01-24-2014 08:45 AM

Yeah, you definitely need to make it a priority to find another job. Your manager sounds like a dick and he's not willing to help so time to move on. You're missing out on some of the best times of your life!

Trust me, I feel like I'm gonna go crazy at times with my schedule of 40 hours a week, keeping up with house / car maintenance, and being a father / husband. Fortunately I have memories of my college years to think back on and know I experienced some fun in my life! I suggest you work to create those memories sooner rather than later. Good luck.

I worked overnights for about four years. Though it was nice to get work over with before management got there in the morning, it sucked that my life revolved around my sleep schedule.

Now that I'm back on days, I have a lot more energy, I'm eating right, I've lost weight, and overall, just in a better mood all the time.

I'd say bail. Find something else :2cents:

Spent most of my life working back side of the clock and in time zones 8+ hours from home. I saw many people burn out/crash because they did not adapt.

It's extremely important to eat healthy: fish, salads and lots of water. Minimize sugar, alcohol and caffeine. Work-out and run. I learned to sleep when my body needed it.

I loved the freedom to enjoy the daylight for sports, shopping/dining and day-game.

Rapture 01-26-2014 07:04 PM

Make sure you tell future employers that you tried to work out a compromise with your boss, but he was unwilling. The fact is you DID work graveyard, so you did your part. It'll make him look bad, not you.

Another thing (slightly off-topic) is try to educate yourself on your state workplace laws as much as possible. I've had jobs where my employer forced me to do things that were 100% illegal in my state. Refusing to pay me overtime, making me work "until the job is done. No breaks, no lunch" and so on. Of course I didn't realize it was illegal until I quit that place.

You're working graveyards, as a janitor/cleaner for minimum wage? You can make more at a LOT of jobs and work normal hours. PS: Modding a car is not a priority in life...
